Description

Stumpy Lake in Virginia Beach is a popular public course known for a friendly vibe and a layout that offers a solid test without feeling overly punishing. The course typically blends wooded corridors with water features and marshy areas that reward accurate driving and disciplined targets. It’s playable for most golfers, but it can bite if you get impatient because trouble can lurk near common landing zones. The round often comes down to approach play and putting—greens reward correct placement and distance control. Overall, Stumpy Lake is a dependable VB-area rotation course: accessible, enjoyable, and capable of being a real test on a good day.

I've played this course for over 25 years and it's sad what it has become. Stumpy Lake was never the "pristine" golf course, but it was affordable and in good shape in the early 2000's. Today it just seems completely unkept. A Robert Trent Jones design shouldn't be treated as such. If Stumpy Lake's course conditions looked like Riverfront, I'd easily pay $90+ to play here because the architecture of this course is beautiful, but it really needs an overhaul. Some greens were actually decent, but overall 2.5/5 for me. DRAINAGE IS HORRIBLE! SWAMPY LAKE! NOT EVEN A REAL COURSE AT THIS POINT. I wouldn't even call this a golf course it's basically a mud field with holes at the end.

Stumpy Lake Golf Course has a unique and challenging layout, but it isn’t for the reasons one would think. Most golf courses have difficult pin positions, tricky hazard placement or maybe even bunker protected greens. Stumpy lake takes a different approach to making your golf experience memorable. The reasons stumpy may be a difficult course is that they strive to give you the most unpleasant experience. The tee boxes were so hard, by hole four, I wasn’t golfing anymore; I was mining for gold. Have fun putting as the greens were so dry, I think I saw a tumbleweed roll by. My ball hopped, skipped and jumped… pretty much everything but actually role. When you think you’re done, stumpy never fails to amaze me with their fairways. I felt as if I was hitting out of a parking lot painted green. You would be better off hooking your drive into the pine straw and you would have a better lie than in the fairway. You could hit it straight down the middle and your ball would be in a crater. The price was not worth it. The course should give me a hard hat instead of a scorecard, and pay me to go into that construction zone. Please do better, as my love for the game of golf diminished halfway through. I stopped keeping score and had to keep my will to live. Thank you Stumpy Lake GC. P.S. Please put some money into the course, you could tell it hasn’t been funded since Tigers rookie year.

I’ll start out with the fact that I really enjoy the course. It’s a fun layout with some great holes. But my issue is with the cost to play vs the condition of the course. Played today, Sunday morning and paid $49. These pictures are from the fairwaiys and greens. And I didn’t have to go searching for bad spots just to strengthen my review. It is in miserable shape. I’d expect this for a $15 municipal course. But maybe I’m dramatic or have to high of expectations. You be the judge

Entire course is in horrible shape, don’t waste your money. Starter was senile and rude. Watched him yell at a group of young women learning to golf. They wanted to share a bag of clubs and he was on a power trip. Had to sit in the overbooked cart line and watch cringing. Waited around more than I swung a club due to the tee sheet, management are absolute doorknobs. Play literally anywhere else in VB, this place is in disgusting shape and egregiously overpriced.

I was trying to get in a round before an evening flight. Booked a last minute tee time at 11:34am on a Sunday and had to leave at 4:30pm after playing 15 holes. Slowest pace of play I've ever experienced. The tee times need to be spaced out more if there are that many beginners on the course. The course was in rough condition which is a shame because the layout is fun. All the employees I interacted with were very nice. Could be an awesome course if there were some organizational changes and the greens were given a little love.
