Description

Honey Bee in Virginia Beach is a popular public course known for being playable yet demanding enough to keep better players interested. The layout typically blends tree-lined corridors with strategic hazards, and it can punish wayward drives—accuracy off the tee is a major factor. Many holes reward conservative targets and a “hit the fat part of the green” mindset, because short-siding yourself can lead to tricky up-and-downs. It’s also a course locals return to often, which speaks to its balance of challenge, value, and overall experience. If you’re building a Virginia Beach-area rotation, Honey Bee is one of the standard go-to rounds.

100% DO NOT recommend, especially for the price you are paying. Staff was bragging about how well maintained the course was at the start of the round. And to give credit where it is due, the layout and greens were in good shape. But for a course that has 19-22 sand bunkers on the course, some of the worst maintained hazards in the city AND THERE IS NO CONTEST. I haven’t even mentioned that it was over $150 for 2 players…. And yet not a single bunker is playable in the slightest. Ruts, pipes and sewage plates sticking out the concrete they try to call sand. I have over 80 rounds played on the vb area. There are far better options. For relatively the same price and better course maintenance you can thoroughly enjoy vb national, Redwing or Heron Ridge. For a significantly cheaper price and better course maintenance you can play kempsville greens, hells point, sewells point, ocean view, or battlefield. The ONLY course I would put below this one, in regard to bang for your buck and in regard to the course itself, is Stumpy Lake.

Course Is fun to play, however the greens are hit or miss. Not maintained well enough for cost to play here. I would give them 4 stars if they weren’t as overpriced. VB national twilight for 9 holes is the same price, and it’s a much nicer course. A lot of the greens are pretty beat up

Very enjoyable course. Staff are really outstanding and go out of their way to make sure you have a great day on the course. Excellent Pro shop and clubhouse. The carts are new and the best I have ever operated in more than 35 years. Green’s are in great shape and many of the holes offer an exciting challenge. Excellent price point for both weekends and week days.

Honey Bee is one of the more expensive public courses in the area. It’s under 6,000 yards from the back tees so a relatively short course. Greens are in great shape. Our tee times did get screwed up by an hour and the course does not call to confirm tee times before arrival but the course was not busy at all for a Saturday so we were able to get out on the course with no issues. There are some areas of the course that are having drainage issues or they may be having a leak or sprinkler issues as there were very large puddles of water in multiple areas of the course even though it hasn’t rained in a week. All in all, still one of the better public courses in the area. UPDATE 5/17* -No beverage cart an entire round on a Saturday. -New golf carts are very nice. -Hole 6 has been having a major issue with standing water in the fairway about 50 yards short of the green for a long time. Looks like they have done nothing to fix the issue over the weeks, maybe months. I have played here 3 times within the past month and its been there every time. I have seen complaints about it online from the surrounding neighborhood due to it possibly being a major attraction for mosquitoes and it just looks horrible. Hit your ball in it, you probably aren't getting it back. (Photo attached) -Nearly all bunkers on the course were full of water and unplayable. -Greens are still in great shape.

Only some of the grounds are maintained, those that present a well kept image in the front entrance. Grounds in rear, including several dead trees some of which literally fall over and remain on the ground, in addition to grassy spaces that have not been mowed in over a year where grass heights are over 4 feet tall, continue to be neglected and an eyesore for adjacent residents. Shameful disregard for the community next door.
