Description

Gypsy Hill in Staunton is a classic Virginia municipal course with deep local roots and a setting tied to the area’s historic parkland feel. The course tends to play with traditional parkland character—tree-lined holes, modest elevation changes, and a routing that encourages smart placement. It’s not about overpowering the course; it’s about steady play, distance control, and putting on greens that can be subtly demanding. The vibe is typically relaxed and community-oriented, which makes it a great place for repeat rounds and for getting a feel for local golf culture. If you enjoy municipal courses with history and a distinctive sense of place, Gypsy Hill is a strong Shenandoah/Valley stop.

Worst golf course I have ever played. Tee boxes are so bad you’re teeing off in the rough. Cart path is non-existent. Worst course layout I have ever seen. Fairways haven’t been mowed in a year it seems. Greens haven’t been mowed either, rolling at about a 2. Paid for 18, could only get through 9.

The cart paths was horrendous, portions of the greens were dirt with no grass. I played the whites and several tee boxes didn't have any white posts installed. The counter person checking me in at the proshop was rude. I gave 3 stars because the price was for 18 holes and a cart was great. The course layout was also nice with good elevation changes.

You can't beat the price at $20 for 18 holes including cart. And the cart was needed given how hilly the course is. Greens were in fantastic condition. Fairways and tee boxes had too much crabgrass. Course has cold water to drink on several holes. Nice marble marker maps of each hole at each tee box. There is a lot of up and down and tight fairways. Hardly no water hazards and no sand traps. Course is only 5900 yards from the back tees.

Make sure you bring a hammer so you can put your tees in the ground. Also make sure you bring an oxygen tank for the elevation change. And consider wearing a helmet because the tee boxes are about 3 feet from the green of the prior hole.

Usually a decent option for a cheap round. Unfortunately they have stopped mowing low, so the fairways are 2-3” deep and the greens are like shag carpets, with grass growing into the holes. Tee boxes are also extremely uneven, so you’re playing off a hill to tee off. Won’t be back anytime soon.
