Description

Hills' namesake at Palmetto Dunes emphasizes precision over power, with off-balance lies, cross-winds and lagoons touching 10 holes. Subtle doglegs and elevated green pads reward players who choose position over driver on tight corridors. The coastal setting means wind direction can transform club selection from hole to hole. From the back tees it plays in the mid-6,600s, but the variety of combos lets you fine-tune difficulty. A traditional driving range and the resort's practice amenities make it easy to find a rhythm before the round.

I’ve played this course multiple times over the years, and what I remember as a walkable, fun layout traversing the Palmetto Dunes waterway has unfortunately turned into a poor value. Pros: • Excellent staff: Greeted the moment I arrived, bag taken care of immediately, and the pro shop was friendly and welcoming. • Surprisingly good pace of play even with cart-path-only restrictions due to overseeding. • The layout is genuinely enjoyable and very walkable. • Complimentary range balls are always appreciated. Cons: • Course conditions are trending in the wrong direction. The greens were extremely fuzzy, slow, and several showed clear signs of damage. • Maintenance presence was overwhelming. Despite the already-rough conditions, it felt like there was a maintenance crew on nearly every hole—almost as if they were following me throughout the round. Bottom line: I enjoy this course and want to keep liking it, but the value just isn’t there right now. In Hilton Head, pricing should be in line with other lower mid-tier options like Shipyard. Anything over $100 feels overpriced given current conditions, and $150+ is flat-out highway robbery.

As a Lowcountry resident it is great to have two excellent Arthur Hills courses on the island. Played the Palmetto Dunes course on 1/24/26 and the course was in very good shape. Tees and fairways very lush for this time of the year. Some of the greens had bare areas and under repair but nothing to deter playing. Once spring comes they will be lush and rolling true. The course is challenging but fair. It winds through the beautiful lagoons of Palmetto Dunes with water coming into play on over half the holes. It’s not overly long but it has multiple tee boxes and you can play a combo box if the hole is too long for you which is awesome. If you are looking for unique layout which is challenging and fair for all abilities I highly recommend this course.

We played this in October and the course was immaculate!! Our group of guys was worried we wouldn’t get to play because it rained for hours in the early morning, from like 2-6 am and our tee time was at 9 am. We called and asked if the tee times were still good to go and they said “Absolutely!” With a shocked expression because they knew they were open rain or shine. We went early to check on the conditions of the course and honestly you would’ve never knew it rained unless you looked in a few low spots between holes where water puddled. Otherwise the tee boxes, fairways and greens were perfect! Of course we had to play cart path only but it’s fine we enjoy walking! We decided to play two man scrambles in our group of eight and had a blast with fun competition on a beautiful course!

Coming from Ohio where we have a bunch of Arthur Hills architecture, I couldn’t miss out on playing at one out of state. The course was in fantastic shape and has a memorable course layout with a lot interesting golf architecture. The course isn’t overwhelmingly long, but when you are out of position or have a funky lie on the rolling contoured fairways, it’s a great challenge!

I planned & booked a 12 person golf trip with the help of Becky DeRose at PD, she was very accommodating. Our golf trip included rounds at RTJ & Arthur Hills. Both were in great shape (10/24 & 10/25). Edward Sires in the club house made the day at Hills extra special as someone (Me!! LOL) got a hole in one on hole #8. Got me a flag that our group signed and took a photo, very memorable for my first hole in 1. For a tee sheet being stacked the pace of play was good - lots of cart Marshall’s - and beer cart girls several times. RTJ w/ the top tracer range is a nice touch before your round. Quick service as we got a couple of buckets of beers & food before our tee time. Shelly was great at Top Tracer. Mario at the bar in the clubhouse was great. Easily accommodating our hole in 1 celebration at the end of the round. Lots of wind at RTJ front 9 in your face. Be ready to club up.
