Description

A beloved collegiate venue, Furman balances championship bite with daily-fee playability. A 2008 renovation modernized greens and bunkers and the facility continues to invest in practice amenities, so it's as much a training ground as a destination round. The routing uses gentle elevation to create varied approach angles and smart risk-reward par 5s. Tee selection matters here; from the tips it's a serious test, yet forward tees keep the course welcoming. Conditioning is consistently a point of pride.

Furman is always in good shape. It's not the most plush course in the world, but it is well taken care of. The fairways are well defined and in good shape, but usually a little harder. The layout is challenging but not overly difficult. The tee boxes are decent. The greens are the headliner at Furman. They roll fast for the area compared to all other courses. They are undulating and hard to hit. Your short game will likely suffer the first few times you play here. Many turtle shell greens that make it difficult to hold. The cart and practice areas are all well maintained. The club house is just an old school club house, hot dog at the turn.. Scores out of 10 Club house 6.8 Carts 8.5 Tee boxes 7.1 Fairways 7.4 Greens 8.2 Course Layout 7.6 Pace of play 7.5 Overall: 7.59 / 10

We were a group of three and played on a Wednesday. Unfortunately, the pace of play was backed up from the start, even though the Starter came out twice to remind the group in front to keep pace. One player behind us even left early because it was taking too long. It took us nearly five hours to finish. I can’t fully blame the group ahead, they seemed young and were learning, but the real issue appears to be course management. I’ve played many courses, and this was by far the first where management was this poor. The course itself is nice, but for the price, it doesn’t feel worth it. There are other courses of similar quality at better rates. This was my first visit, and unfortunately, it will be my last.

Rated the #1 public course in the Upstate of South Carolina, which is not a surprise. It's also rated in the top college courses in the country. Designed by Richard K. Weber in the late 1950s and recently had a renovation in 2008. This course has been the home of famous PGA and LPGA players alike. Brad Faxon, Betsy King, Beth Daniel, Dottie Pepper, Joan Delk, and Sherri Turner, to name a few. I truly feel if you can play the Furman course well, you should be able to play well anywhere. This course is a mix of tight fairways and complex greens. These greens may be the best test of putting in the area. Some drastic movement, but where it digs in, is subtle movement late near the hole locations. There are fantastic bunkers, which are well positioned around the course. It's a great mix of par 3's, 4's, and 5's. This course also calls on a handful of shaping with fades and draws from the tees and fairways. The course is easy to walk and makes for a fantastic time. In my opinion, the 3rd hole may be the toughest and best hole. It requires a medium to short drive and then demands a great approach. The green has a false right side, and anything close to that edge will fall off the green. Putting on this surface will take the most keen of eyes, there's movement everywhere. I highly recommend this course and make it a must if you're in the upstate!

Hey my last name is Furman, so I wish I could give this course 5 stars but I can't.. Overall rating: Scenic: 6.9/10 Conditions: 7.25/10 Layout: 6.75/10 It was a pretty solid course, the scenery was pretty basic, a couple of ponds and some nice trees on the property, but you can hear the bustle of the city around you, loud vehicles and stereo systems. Course conditions were pretty good, nothing really out of place or bad. The greens were in great shape, and rolled well. I played in March so I'm sure this course wasn't at it's peak which is why I'm giving it a strong rating for looking so good just coming out of winter. The layout was alright, not super challenging, and most holes are pretty straight. I'm not a huge fan of parkland style courses (ones that you can see most of the course to the left and right of you.) It had some elevation changes, some dog legs, and a few water challenges but nothing to write home about. Overall the course was nice, and nothing I would complain about. I would definitely enjoy this course if I lived in the area. I was told by a lot of people in the area to play this course. I think so many people recommended it because it the closest course in town to play, but it seemed to be over hyped. For ease of access, yeah it's great, but if you go just a little drive away, you'll run into a lot better courses.

This is such an underrated course. I'm an alum, so there's some natural bias. But, I've played courses all over the U.S. and a few dozen of the best courses in Scotland, and Furman holds up very well, especially considering its value. The layout balances forgiveness for inexperienced folks but requires a wide variety of successful shots to score. The fairways and greens are in great shape and the staff are friendly and helpful. It's also a very walkable course (weather depending), which is a forgotten trait stateside and one I appreciate. If I lived nearby I'd join in a heartbeat, but I always look forward to playing it when I visit. Can't wait to play it again soon.
