Description

Erie Golf Club is a historic, tradition-rich private club that’s widely regarded as one of the premier golf addresses in northwest Pennsylvania. The course rewards classic strategy—positioning off the tee, precise approach play, and a short game that can handle pressure when you miss. It’s a place where conditioning and atmosphere tend to match the club’s stature, creating a refined golf day from arrival through the last putt. The layout is designed to be played often by members, and it rewards familiarity as you learn safer misses and preferred angles into greens. The club culture typically feels golf-forward, with a strong competitive heartbeat alongside the social side. Overall, it’s top-tier Erie private golf: historic, strategic, and built around serious shot value.

This Golden Age golf course was a treat to play. The course is designed by A W Tillinghast who also designed courses at Medina, Bethpage Black, Winged Foot, and Baltasrul as well as many other highly ranked courses. The layout of the course was a magnificent mix of long and short holes, left and right dog legs and risk reward holes. The course is not long at 6250 from the tips, but keep in mind when it was built in 1928 there were no such things as 460cc drivers or Pro V1 golf balls. The greens rolled very well and had some contours to make you think. Only 1 hole had a green that was rough and beat up on edges. The fall colors added even more beauty and tranquility to the round. While fall leaves always make finding even a shot in the fairway a challenge, the couple of mtce folks I saw were working diligently to blow them out of play. All the folks I encountered at the course were very friendly and helpful. This course was recently purchased and the new owner plans to close the course all of 2025 to restore it to its original design per an article I read. Not sure what that entails, but the only thing I would change is perhaps taking out a few trees here and there. This is a great course today, don’t change it too much. Get out and play this course in 2024 while you can.

Great layout, challenging hills, good greens….9 holes for now. If this course is brought back to its former 18 hole glory it will be a favorite!

Horrible experience! My friends and I were golfing earlier today at Erie Golf Course for around 2 hours and 30 minutes. Near the end of our session, we were approached by an older man, which we later found out is the owner of the course. Now mind you we wernt doing anything wrong nor misbehaving. The owner approached us to complain very aggressively that we were taking very long with our 9 holes. Personally 2 and a half hours isn’t a very long time for 9 holes especially for newer players. We were not holding anyone up either and the when we thought we were, we let them play through us. The owner of the Golf Course was harassing us and following us every hole we went to complaining about how we played. He rudely told us to play faster and that we had to be goofing off because there’s no way we could be taking that low. I then nicely explained to the man that we were newer players and that we realistically were not taking that long. He wouldn’t stop following us even after we asked him that to stop following us, and as we tried to reason with him. We were treated terribly by the owner. Him harassing me and my friends has made me never want to attend the course again. We paid $20 to play on a unmaintained course and be treated like bad children. The course is not well maintained and is overgrown and has random holes everywhere. Me and my friends were very respectful to the man while he treated us with hostility. In the end the man yelled at us for quite literally just playing golf. The owner of the golf course harassed me and my friends and treated us the worst i’ve ever been treated. Personally I would recommend for anyone thinking about golfing here to go somewhere else. There is no golf course that should treat their customers how we got treated.

This used to be such a beautiful course but it is now completely not maintained. I actually thought it was abandoned when I drove past the lower holes. $30 to play 9 holes on a non maintained course where their variety comes from just having 3 different holes on each green. A shame!
