Description

Ellis Maples' River Course complements its sibling with a slightly shorter yardage and more movement around water. It favors placement off the tee to set up attacking angles into receptive greens. Bunkering is strategic rather than punitive, putting a premium on thinking through each shot. The setting is serene, with the Sandhills' trademark pines and sandy soils shaping both look and play. Shared practice amenities with the club's Pines Course include a full driving range.

Review for the Pines course As usual with my reviews, I will break down the course into its core features and review them. I shot 88 from the white tees on a brisk 52 degree day. Amenities 5/5 - In addition to the driving range and two putting/chipping greens, there is a pitching area in the middle of the course. Tee Boxes 4/5 - No big complaints, some uneven spots but no bare ones. Fairways 5/5 - Considering time of year and the fairways are green is what added to the score. Rough 5/5 - Rough is rough but not tough. Very playable Bunkers * - I can't score this well because majority of the bunkers were either under repair or being upgraded. The bunkers that I ended up in that weren't, were not all that bad though. Greens 3/5 - While the greens roll fast and there isn't alot of slope to account for, there was too much sprouts that messed up putting lines. Layout 4/5 - Good mix of traditional straight forward holes and gambler style holes. There are a couple holes where cutting a corner can lead to pitch ons. Being my first time playing here in several years, it was nice to see the changes new management is trying to bring to the course. I'll visit again when it warms up

Played the Pines Course after a hard rain the day before. Even after all the water, the fairways had dried out and the greens were firm, quick, and true. Fairways are pretty wide open too, so you won't lose very many balls if you're having an off day. A great value for the sandhills area!

Playing the River course was enjoyable. Can tell the difference since new mgmt. Would definitely play it again. Can't wait to see how the Pines course turns out, after rehab.

Failed to have out pre-booked tee time that was part of a golf package. Course was in terrible shape. Weeds everywhere. Poorly Manicured. Bunkers were not conditioned. Pro shop personal were unfriendly. We quit playing after nine to get lunch in before our afternoon round. If you're in town on a golf trip, absolutely look elsewhere or double up on a nicer course. I wish I had read the reviews before accepting the booking.

Played the course today 5/25/25. Very disappointed in the condition of the course. Grass on most greens are dead or almost dead. Some greens had grass that was alive. Grass on the rest of the course was very weedy. No cart girl, no place to get food or drinks other than the few options of pop and Gatorade in the clubhouse. It will be a course I take off the list of courses to play in the Pinehurst area.
