Description

North of Durham in Rougemont, Lake Winds is a straightforward, friendly layout that emphasizes placement over brute force. Fairways are framed by mature trees, and a handful of pond crossings add bite without overwhelming the average player. From the middle tees the course stays under 6,000 yards, ideal for casual groups or faster rounds. Greens are open in front and receptive, yet quick enough to keep you honest on downhill putts. While there's ample short-game space, there is not a traditional full driving range on site.

Lots of potential. great layout. would love an update on the state of the renovations. Appreciate Mr. Coffey investing in the course Latest review ( previous below) Played mid April and improvement is definitely showing fairways are improving And they are blending some of the new sod in. The greens are 100 x better. First off they are green, secondly they are largely smooth. From where they started they are now about 80-90% smoothed out with a few remaining bare or uneven patches. A bit hard but when they can be aerated that will improve as well. Some of the holes have been made longer and the tee boxes can still be sketchy. Some holes are punishingly long off the tee over water (17, I’m cursing at you) Overall continued optimism and definitely should be on or near your radar Just as a follow up- played the course last day of last year. Things are in the works. Most obvious are upgrades to the clubhouse exterior ( and pool area!), renovated cart paths and bridges, new carts with gps, and a lot of tree removal. The latter opens the course up and perhaps is also aimed at improving growing conditions for areas of the fairways and greens. Some early signs of improvement in the tees fairways and greens but nothing substantial. One odd aspect is that some of the bare areas have squares of sod laid down creating abrupt changes in the thickness and level of the areas. Hopefully these will be blended into the surrounding grass during a more significant upgrade this spring. So change is happening but nothing substantial yet in terms of playability. Memberships are now available but their initiation and monthly fees don’t make sense for what’s currently on offer especially if you don’t live close and expect to play a lot of weekday afternoons 4/8. Looking forward to playing this spring. Another positive sign is that ownership is responding to posts here and confirming they have plans in action for the greens and fairways. Would really love to see the grass rise to the level of the location and layout. Membership might be attractive if they offer a package for those who look to play fewer rounds each month due to work and distance.

My family organizes golf tournaments in the Triangle area. Lake Winds is exceptional. My husband and I can't believe we haven't had tournaments here before. The one we had at Lake Winds last month is the most smooth-sailing and stress-free tournament we've ever organized. Despite the fact that the management knows we have our own tournament management team, they still made it sure that everything was taken care of. The LW team arrived earlier than usual, got the driving range ready with free range balls, made sure the GPS-equipped carts were clean and ready to go, greeted the golfers warmly, and made sure the check in process was very smooth. All participants felt the warm welcome and hospitality from each and every LW employee. YOu could see and feel that every LW staff was well-oriented and ready to serve. One of the golfers even uttered: "Man, we're VIPs here!" Scott, the head pro, is amazing! He made sure the tournament went smooth. After personally greeting the golfers at the door of the clubhouse, he monitored the 1st tee box from the start, until every golfer had teed off. When questions were raised by some golfers about tournament details and my husband (who has teed off already) wasn't answering the phone when I called, Scott quickly sent an employee to my husband's flight ahead and communicated with him through the radio. The minor issue was solved instantly. He didn't have to do it. We were not expecting that. Scott himself monitored each flight with the intention to help and assist throughout the round. The golfers were impressed as he always told them "Just let me know if you need anything." That was a great tournament. Every golfer had fun, too - not just because of the format, but also because of the extraordinary experience of being hosted by LW. Thank you, team LW! Since then, golfers from my husband's tour have been playing at LW very often. Lake Winds has become one of their courses of choice. And they always feel the hospitality from all the staff. Great job, LW team!

WOW! What a difference 12 months and new management can make. This course was in terrible condition like most of the 1+ year old posts describe. However, lots of work has been done since then and it's noticeable as soon as you pull onto the property and walk into the clubhouse. Renovations are still being made but the course is 100x better than in the past and I'm looking forward to the next round.

The improvements in such a short time are so impressive.....greens, fairways, cartpaths, clubhouse, carts, etc have come such a long way. Jeff Coffey said it was going to be done right, and he has kept his word! I played in the first tournament 43 years ago, and it's finally a place I want to play often, and I hope to be able to for years to come....
