Description

A Willard Byrd original (redone by Kris Spence) with A1/A4 bentgrass greens, Gates Four mixes pine corridors with water-guarded approaches. The par-5s tempt aggressive second shots if you've found the correct side of the fairway. Renovated bunkers provide crisp visuals and clear targets, and the greens reward creative short-game shots. From the tips it carries a stout rating and slope, yet multiple tee sets make it playable for all. The finishing stretch showcases the property's best movement and risk-reward decisions.

Nice course. My family of 4 really enjoyed playing here. Found this course through golf moose offer. Greens were aerated with lots of holes and sand, making it very tough to putt. But it's understandable as part of maintenance. There are huge fans on every green so that's cool to see. There is also no water station along the way so be aware of that. I do see water faucet (i think) but no way we were going to drink from that. There is also no "cart girl" running around for us to buy snacks and drinks. The main complaint, though, is the restaurant inside the clubhouse. We see signs on the course to order food on hole 8 and hole 17. When we finished our round and were about to leave to find a place to eat, I suggested we try out the clubhouse. When we went inside to ask where the restaurant is located, the lady at the reception asked if we were members. We told her no, so she said it's for members only. The gentleman who golfed right behind us overheard our conversation told us to follow him. My daughter asked the lady inside the restaurant if it's OK for non-members to eat and she said yes. We sat and ordered our food. There was only one other table of 2 besides us so we were able to overhear the phone call between the receptionist and our restaurant host. The receptionist acted we would lie that we were members to eat there. Such ridiculousness treatment for guest golfers. The host/waitress was super nice, southern hospitality as we enjoyed the great tasting food. We will not come back just based on this snobbish treatment from the front desk person. If you don't want my money to eat at the restaurant inside the clubhouse, then don't let outside members golf here and don't put 2 freaking signs to "order food" on the course.

Played really well today, 3 birdies for an 89 from the blue tees. Not sure if it rained the day prior, but the areas around the greens were muddy and soft. Onto the review. Tee Boxes 4.5/5 - With the exception of a few obviously sloped and unlevel ones, the tee boxes were in good shape. Fairways 4/5 - Some fairways had bare areas, but for the most part were well kept. No real crazy slopes. Greens 3.5/5 - Soft and slow. I'd say they run at a 9. You will be fixing ball marks all day since any shot outside 50 yds that huts will make a decent mark. The undulations aren't fierce, but some pin placements require planning. Bunkers 4/5 - I was a monster out of bunkers today, scrambling machine. Despite being damp, only one instance of a fried egg lie. There was a good amount of sand to allow blasting or picking. Layout 4/5 - The course really used its water features to the fullest, bringing them into play on drives on a number of holes. Some decent elevation changes mixed in with only a couple doglegs. Amenities 5/5 - Driving range, separate chipping/pitching and putting greens. Practice bunker Overall I enjoyed the course. Kinda lame that you have to be a member or guest of a member to walk. I'd recommend it to others still.

A great time. The fairways were PERFECT. The greens were 3 week from being punched... kinda soft but the roll well! Any missed putt was on me not the greens! I finally parred hole #6! It has been on of my hardest in Cumberland County list over the last 20 years..

Gates Four has an excellent aquatics program. Ms Ruth's forty plus years of teaching young and old how to swim enhances this Country Club's appeal.

I don’t even know where to begin, but let’s start with the price—$75. Our group was charged full price for a course with greens that are basically sand traps. Honestly, we should have just driven to the beach and putted there; it would have been a better experience. To make matters worse, we found ourselves stuck behind an 8-some on hole ten who refused to let us play through. When I inquired at the pro shop about a Marshall, they informed me there wasn’t one. I then asked if they could break up the group, and the response was a dismissive no because they were members. As we continued to play, one of the older guys turned around and confronted me, claiming they felt rushed and still wouldn’t let us through. This entire experience has been frustrating. For the price we paid, this place is unacceptable, and the members act like they own the course without any regard for the game or its etiquette. It's truly disappointing. I honestly hope this establishment faces serious consequences for its lack of respect for both the game and its customers.
