Description

Hanover is a public-friendly course with a traditional North Jersey feel—straightforward holes, tree-lined framing, and a routing that rewards disciplined decisions. It’s the kind of track where accuracy and distance control matter more than sheer power, especially on approach shots where being pin-high is a real advantage. Many holes encourage you to pick a conservative target and trust it, because the trouble is positioned to catch typical misses. The course is also a good “improvement” venue: play it a few times and you’ll quickly learn which clubs keep you out of trouble and which lines are worth avoiding. The vibe is generally relaxed and community-driven, making it easy to bring mixed groups. If you want a dependable public round that tests fundamentals without feeling punitive, Hanover is a solid pick.

Course is in great shape. I played in November, little to no leaves on the ground. Very well maintained course. The club house is nothing special. Pace of play was good, driving range is only 200 yards.

I thought the course was in good shape, however… the layout of course isn’t great. A lot of back and forth holes. Very small greens. Narrow fairways with very little room for error. I don’t mind a challenge but these narrow holes were almost as if the holes were squeezed in. It was a bit pricy to play as well. The new norm for courses to charge $100 a round has gotten out of hand.

Overall, the course is pretty fun. Most holes are relatively straight, but there is a surprising amount of elevation to the course, which makes it more challenging, and more fun, than you'd expect. The fairways are decent and the greens are all pretty small, but rolled well. My only real gripe is the pace of play. You'll see it in other reviews as well, but we had a group of 4 in front of us, plus a couple of their girlfriends, so it was really 6, but the gf's weren't playing every hole, it seemed. The group behind us seemed to be in a hurry since they hit up perilously close to us a few times to get things moving, but there was nowhere to go since the 6 in front were hacking it around every hole. No one came out to intervene, so it seems there's not a great deal of concern for slow play here. But, honestly, for $45, I'll take 5 hours in the sunshine playing golf over most things, so it's not a huge knock for me. If you start getting twitchy when your round is edging over the 4 and a half hour mark, maybe steer clear.

Played here twice, both were painfully slow. First time was a holiday weekend, so that was understandable. Today, had an early tee time (~8:30) and was told off the bat course was already playing slow. After the couple I was paired with teed off early without me (I was also early), I was told by the Marshall to keep up pace of play as I was walking off the green, even though I was still earlier than my tee time and faster than the pace of play laid out by the course. After having to skip the couple on hole 2, because they spent nearly ten minutes on the green trying to putt, I ended up stuck behind a foursome for the rest of the round that was actively fishing for balls out of water hazards in front of the starter and not playing ready golf (2 walkers and 2 in their own carts, waiting on individual shots as a group). When I brought up being told to keep up pace on hole 1 while others are actually playing slower, starter told me to just go play golf. If your course is playing slow an hour into the day, then it's on the course, not the golfers.
