Description

Old Tappan is a Bergen County municipal course that offers a convenient, accessible round with a community-golf feel. The layout generally rewards keeping the ball in play and controlling approach distances, since tight spots and traditional targets can punish sloppy misses. It’s a strong “practice round that counts” course—you can work on driving accuracy, wedge proximity, and putting speed under real conditions. The pace and vibe tend to be local and familiar, making it an easy course to play frequently without it feeling like a production. Scoring usually comes from patience: avoid penalties, take center-of-green targets, and let birdies come naturally. If you want straightforward muni golf in North Jersey with a reliable layout, Old Tappan is a solid pick.

It’s a lovely golf course but the way to get in and out is horrific for anybody who has any slight knee or back problems. It’s terrible. On one side they’ve got a really big incline and decline and the other set of stairs that are ridiculous.

It appears many others have encountered the “rude ranger” here. First time playing this course and i”they were actively repairing bunkers. I encountered a heavy machine operator in a back hoe digging out a bunker, literally swinging the shovel piece over cart path so I avoided area and drove across fairway and parked on opposite side. All of a sudden the ranger comes flying up on his cart and berates me, even after I pointed out the risk. He continues raising his voice and says he will throw me off course. My foursome was absolutely stunned. For $85, I get verbally abused and play on a course under repair. I will never play here again and have told and will tell anyone to avoid at their peril. The club management has obviously seen these reviews yet they have not fired this ranger yet. Disgraceful.

I have to agree with the most recent post prior to ours. Not a good place to play for non members… I rarely leave reviews, and when I do they are almost always positive. I had a very nice call when booking for 3 people; however, at the same time, the ranger was rude and felt like he was doing his best to make sure we did not enjoy our time. We played just over a 2 hour round (9 holes) and he rushed us on nearly every hole. If he was not rushing us, he had a chirpy comment (“slowing us down” even more). Tried pretty hard to be nice to the guy too.. but again, when we play a 2 hour round and the commentary is relentless, spend your money elsewhere. The course was ok- nothing special for the price or the attitude.. They clearly do not want to earn new or recurring customers.

The course marshal was extremely rude, telling us to hurry multiple times while we were already waiting for the people in front of us, literally yelling at us for making a mistake in where we parked the carts on one hole because we had never been there before. Impossible to relax and have fun. Course itself was in terrible shape as well. First and last time I'll play there. Brutal.

ATTENTION: Be cautious of potentially toxic rangers or staff, especially if your group is new to golf or non-white. Our experience at this course was unfortunately ruined by poor treatment that felt both rude and discriminatory. On the first hole, a ranger approached us and told us to keep the gas cart in front of the group, not behind. This was unusual to me, but we followed his instruction. He then said to me, “No lesson, I’m watching you.” I would have been stick to my mom and sister, if I gave them a lesson. We had separated due to our tee shots and were getting ready for our second shots. The ranger seemed to assume I would eventually instruct them simply because they are beginners, which felt unfair. After we completed the first hole, the same ranger came back and told us we were playing too slowly, claiming the group behind us had complained. We explained that we had started on time and had only just finished the first hole. When we asked where the group behind us was, he replied, “I don’t know, you can go talk to them if you want.” Again, he insisted we keep the gas cart in front, which we had already done. His attitude was dismissive and made no sense. We assured him that if the group behind us caught up, we would pick up our balls or skip a hole to speed up play. Still, the entire interaction left us feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. While the course itself was in excellent condition and I appreciated the layout, the behavior of the ranger and the general attitude from others made us feel like we didn’t belong. I couldn’t help but wonder if it was because we are non-white and not experienced players. To make matters worse, as we were near the clubhouse, an older white male golfer approached my mom and sister and said, “I think women are supposed to cook at home.” Maybe he thought it was a joke, but it was sexist and offensive. Because of these experiences, I will not be returning to this course. A beautiful course can’t make up for such blatant disrespect and poor treatment.
