Description

Black Bear is an 18-hole, resort-style course that leans into scenic terrain, elevation movement, and a “big round” feeling without being intimidating for mid-handicaps. It’s known for a mix of rolling fairways, water features that show up at key decision points, and approach shots where the safe play is often smarter than the aggressive one. The layout tends to reward conservative targets off the tee because the trouble is positioned to punish lazy misses rather than bold attempts. When conditions are firm, it becomes more about trajectory and landing angles into greens than pure yardage. It’s a great choice if you want a polished, full-length round with enough teeth to keep strong players engaged. Expect a classic resort rhythm: a few chances to score, a few holes that can flip your card fast if you get reckless.

Unforgettable Day at Black Bear Golf Club – Crystal Springs Resort, NJ I recently had the pleasure of attending a corporate golf outing at Black Bear Golf Club, one of the standout courses at Crystal Springs Resort in Hamburg, New Jersey. I attended with my father, and from the moment we arrived, it was clear that we were in for something special. The event was exceptionally well-organized from start to finish. As we pulled into the lot, we were greeted by friendly staff who directed us with ease and efficiency. Upon checking in, we received a beautifully put-together gift bag stocked with premium golf accessories—tees, balls, and even a few branded items that added a nice, personal touch. It was a thoughtful gesture that instantly elevated the tone of the event and showed the attention to detail the organizers had put into every part of the day. The team at Black Bear truly went above and beyond. Every employee we encountered—from the bag drop to the starter to those managing the event logistics—was courteous, knowledgeable, and committed to making the day run as smoothly as possible. There were a few minor hiccups along the way, mainly related to the course being a bit tight in certain areas, which can occasionally cause some backups. However, the staff handled it all professionally and kept things moving without any stress or confusion. Their proactive communication and genuine hospitality did not go unnoticed. As for the course itself—Black Bear is absolutely breathtaking. Nestled in the rolling hills of Sussex County, the layout offers a perfect blend of challenging design and natural beauty. The fairways were immaculately kept, with lush, green grass that provided excellent lies and a visually pleasing backdrop. The greens rolled fast and true, with subtle undulations that tested your short game without ever feeling unfair. Bunkers were well-raked and strategically placed, and the rough was just long enough to make you work without being punitive. Each hole at Black Bear presents a unique challenge, with several risk-reward opportunities that keep things exciting for players of all skill levels. The front nine features more elevation changes and sweeping vistas, while the back nine tightens up a bit, demanding more precision off the tee. The scenic value alone is worth the round—from tree-lined fairways and serene ponds to mountain views that truly make you pause and take it all in. What stood out to me the most—beyond the picturesque setting and excellent playing conditions—was the overall atmosphere of the resort and course. There’s a certain energy at Crystal Springs that makes you feel like you’re part of something elevated yet welcoming. Whether you’re a casual golfer looking for a relaxing day outdoors or a competitive player seeking a solid test of skill, Black Bear delivers. In short, this was one of the most enjoyable golf outings I’ve had in recent memory. Sharing the day with my father made it even more special, and I couldn’t have asked for a better setting to enjoy time together on the course. I’ll absolutely be returning to Crystal Springs and highly recommend Black Bear Golf Club to anyone looking for a first-class golf experience in New Jersey.

I revisited a golf club with my golf group, known for its beautiful scenery. The weather was perfect, the course was in great condition, and it turned out to be a very satisfying day.

I won't be coming back. Lots of blind shots, elevated greens, really sharp slopes off the greens. the carts are the SLOWEST I've ever seen...literally almost died on several hills. The course is in decent condition, though the greens, while generally well maintained, were very inconsistent in speed. Poor sand traps. While the front 9 was a decent layout, the back 9 is a pure joke. Don't waste your money nor time playing here.

Great golf course in Jersey! Well kept and level of difficulty is medium. A lot up and down in the hills that make it very nice and challenging. Recommended!

Check-in at Black Bear Golf Course was a breeze with helpful and friendly staff ready to answer all my questions. The course itself is well-kept and extremely fun to play, although getting from hole to hole can be a bit confusing at times. The cart girl comes by frequently and is always helpful and a pleasure to deal with. After the round, the bar was excellent. I highly recommend the Black Bear Burger—it definitely hit the spot. Overall, a fantastic golfing experience with just a minor navigational issue. getting from hole to hole can be confusing.
