The course is so green and pristine! It would feel even closer to Augusta if everyone repaired their ball marks and divots, but the grounds crew does an incredible job keeping everything looking crisp. The greens are fast, challenging, and a ton of fun. The front nine is especially picturesque and challenging, while the back nine is just as beautiful but much longer, more open, and far less forgiving. The practice facility is huge, with three really fun practice holes. The restaurant is top-notch with outstanding service, and the pro shop staff and grounds crew are always friendly and welcoming. I do miss the unkept native grass, but it’s hard to argue with the improvements to pace of play and the clean, polished look it gives the course.

I played Old Works for the first time with my 3 sons ages 14-21 yesterday. It was an unforgettable experience! First off, the staff were very friendly and helpful, from the pro shop to the grille. The practice area was extensive and well maintained, including a driving range, chipping green with bunker, large putting green, and a 3 hole practice course (Little Bear). All practice amenities were included with green fees (inclusive of carts). The bar and grille was great for a pre round meal and drinks. If you have the time, I would recommend showing up a couple of hours prior to your tee time, as it adds to the overall experience. The course itself is one of my favorites, and I’ve played quite a few across the US. It’s definitely one of the most unique courses due to the fact that it is constructed literally on an old Super Fund copper mine site. The course is blended into the site exquisitely, with remnants of its history throughout. The scenery is uniquely beautiful and like nothing else you’ve played before. The course was in very good condition and well maintained. The greens are fast and challenging, yet predictable and playable. The fairways are often wide, which allows you to confidently “let it rip” with your driver. The black sand bunkers are made of “crushed black slag”, which is byproduct from the historic copper-smelting process at the mine site. It’s tricky to get out of, as it has a heavier consistency than traditional white bunker sand. It really does add a unique touch to the overall experience, providing a stunning contrast to the course landscape. The course long with significant elevation changes and well placed hazards throughout, ensuring a challenging experience for golfers of all levels. Pace of play was steady… we finished in 4hrs and 20 minutes, which included a 10 minute stop at the turn for a bathroom break and drinks. There were well placed bathrooms and water stations throughout, and all carts are equipped with a cooler, ball/club head cleaners, and phone charging ports. The only thing that was missing was an onboard gps yardage system. But with yardage/course layout phone apps like “18 Birdies”, it’s not necessary. I highly recommend carving out time to play this course if you’re visiting western Montana. If you live in Montana and haven’t played Old Works, put it at the top of your list of “must play” courses in the state. It’s not cheap ($125 pp), but for the cost it truly is a value. I’ve played courses that cost 2-3 times more, and this rivals or exceeds all of them. It’s definitely a little more “low key” for a Jack Nicholas “Signature “ course, in that they don’t have anyone loading your clubs from your car to the cart or cleaning clubs at the finish, etc (at least not when we were there). I personally preferred this vibe, as it fits well given the non pretentious and independent Montana culture, where people are accustomed to “carrying their own weight” so to speak. I can’t wait to get back, and it will become an annual golf outing for us going forward!

It is one thing to have the chance to play an outstanding golf course, which Old Works is. But another to deal with an equally great staff. Everyone one there is a joy to associate with. One of my favorites.!! Keep it up.

We love Old Works! The course is in exceptional condition this last week of the season! All staff are on top of their game; working hard, friendly and helpful! Jack Nicholas can continue to be proud his name is associated with such a well run course and restaurant! Special shout out to the chef/ restaurant staff.
