Superior National at Lutsen is hands-down one of the most breathtaking golf experiences in Minnesota—a true gem on the North Shore that combines challenging play with jaw-dropping natural beauty. The sweeping views are simply unforgettable: as you navigate the 27 holes across the River, Canyon, and Mountain nines, you're treated to panoramic vistas of Lake Superior's endless blue horizon, often described as Minnesota's only "ocean view." On elevated tees and fairways, the massive lake stretches out like an inland sea, framed by the rugged Sawtooth Mountains rising dramatically behind you and the lush Poplar River Valley winding through the course. Every turn reveals a new postcard-worthy scene—whether it's the sparkling water on a clear day or the misty horizon after a rain—making it impossible not to pause and snap photos between shots. The course conditions are outstanding and meticulously maintained, especially on the premier River and Canyon nines (recently renovated with top-tier improvements). The fairways are lush and forgiving yet strategically placed with dramatic elevation changes that add excitement without being unfair. Greens roll true and fast, holding approach shots beautifully, while the white Ohio sand bunkers provide perfect contrast and playability. Multiple tee boxes make it accessible for all skill levels, from beginners enjoying the scenic Mountain nine to low-handicappers tackling the full 18. Cart paths are smooth, GPS-equipped carts enhance the experience with accurate yardages, and the overall layout feels pristine—like playing in a well-kept national park. What elevates every round is the abundant wildlife that calls this Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary home. Nestled in the Superior National Forest, the course is alive with nature: we spotted white-tailed deer grazing calmly near the edges of fairways, foxes darting through the woods, bald eagles soaring overhead with Lake Superior as their backdrop, and countless songbirds filling the air. On quieter mornings or evenings, you might even see black bears in the distance or hear loons calling from the lake—it's a gentle reminder that you're golfing in raw, untamed wilderness. This immersion in nature, combined with the fresh North Shore air, creates a serene, almost meditative golfing escape far removed from urban courses. The staff is friendly and efficient, the clubhouse offers great amenities with views from the patio, and pairing a round with nearby Lutsen Mountains activities makes for a perfect getaway. Whether you're playing 9, 18, or all 27 holes, Superior National delivers world-class scenery, impeccable conditions, and wildlife encounters that make it a must-play destination. I've golfed courses across the country, and this one tops the list for sheer natural wow-factor—can't wait to return!

The course was beautiful! The kitchen was incredible and the staff was friendly. They had quality liquor selection and the scenery was tremendous! I recommend this for groups looking for a challenging and exciting round. Tell the wonderful starter Mary Howdy for us!! You will want to play all 27. River and Canyon is the best 18 holes of golf in northern Minnesota. Also, you and your squad will want to plan time to adventure onto the Mountain course!

I absolutely love this golf course. It was my first experience here and even with booking a t time and arriving only a couple hours before closing time, the staff was gracious enough to let myself and 2 others out on the course to play 9 holes and let us put in an order for food. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone that enjoys playing golf and appreciates friendly above and beyond service that will exceed expectations.

We golfed the Mountain View course and it was so pretty. All of the grass was in great shape.

Yes views are great, personnel are too Yes carts are newer with good tech For the money per round, the course needs better help to get it into $100+ power person a round shape. Hard to justify coming back until the course is in better shape. Also don’t get too close to the green. I believe I was far enough back, obviously was not, cart would not move forward and you will have to back it up back where it tells you to go. Hole 17, go very slow down the hill. It is easy to speed and it’s a problem waiting to happen if you’re not fully engaged in managing your cart. Take it slow, you won’t have to press the gas pedal going down but be prepared to use the brake pedal. Overall, I will return after the course is in a little better shape. It was beautiful.
