Description

Stearns Heritage Golf Course provides a scenic round with wooded borders and gentle elevation shifts that influence club selection. The design balances scorable opportunities with a handful of tougher holes that protect par with narrow landing zones and guarded greens. Practice amenities and instruction programs support skill development for juniors and adults. Course crews prioritize consistent green speeds and clear mowing lines. The result is a community-centered facility that welcomes regular play and outings.

The Stearns Golf Course has had many faces over the years and it has had some facelifts to improve the course but the most recent one is the best yet. Every green is in excellent shape with the exception of #5 which has a few small bare spots. I cut my teeth on this golf course 42 years ago and had not played it for several years. But today I pleasantly surprised at the condition. I gave it a four star only because the fairways only have grass and many bare places. If they could get a Bermuda or Zoysia or some hybrid to grow it would be a nice little nine hole five star. Let’s start with #1 Hole. This hole has been completely rebuilt and you better bring your big stick. It’s a whopping 210 yard par three across the creek and the valley. #2 has also been rebuilt at 145 yard par three. The pond in front of the green guards anything hit short. #3 and #4 are straight away par fours at around 350 yards. #5 is another green that has been completely rebuilt and is now a two tier green. It’s only a 250 yard par four but a large tree on the left poses a threat to any shot hit straight off of he tee box. A nice draw around the tree will get you close the green on a drive. #9 is another par three that requires a big hit off the tee at 210 yards.

Stearns is a beautiful historical community full of history. Grab a bite to eat at the Whistle Stop and ride the rails on the Big South Fork Scenic Railway to Blue Heron. Lots of lovely shops for that special gift, and one of a kind pottery at Pottery by Mehg.

Beautiful little 9 hole course with fun challenging greens and elevation changes that keep you honest. Can't wait to visit again!

Stop by to enjoy a round of golf on this historic course. Built by the Stearns Lumber and Coal Company in the early 1900s, this course is headed by a clubhouse with an in ground pool (no longer filled) and restaurant. Though it saw a few rough years, the course looks as good as ever and the restaurant's deck is a great place to enjoy a bite to eat and look out over the course.

Course is rough to be honest. For a 9 hole crse & 2nd oldest in Ky, one would think they would want to do better. Seems to me more gas gone into the actual facilities in order to hopefully offset expenses, for hosing events etc... However I'm not quite sure who owns this course I'm sure or almost sure itd be a group behind the wall of paper filings you would gj o thru to find out & I would bet you a dollar to what a dinner at that fine establishment, there isn't in the budget enough without private money or grants, the actual funding to bring that crse up to par where it should be. Nit without the State's help which if it's truly a historical course, then by all rights it should recieve some initial finding from the State in order to bring it up to par then it should be maintained by the Stewards of the community who are usually private stake holders who seek to only ensure the course us there for generations to come, not to seek a profit or to sale thier ownership which being a historical benue they couldn't do anything but recieve a tax benefit of some nature I'm quite sure. Thus is how one or a group should get this course into shape and to keep it there.
