My son has recently started taking lessons at the NNGC. He has learn so much in such a short time And the staff have been so supportive! Helping him find the right gloves and encouraging him to hit the range whenever possible. He’s fallen in love and I can’t wait to get out there and watch him play!’

I’m not usually someone who takes time to write negative reviews, but my experience with the staff at Newport News Golf Club was incredibly disappointing. I’ve been coming to Deer Run since I was a kid and recently moved back to the area. I was excited to return because it’s affordable and usually in solid condition—but this visit completely changed my perception. I was double charged, and the receipt clearly showed I was charged twice. I noticed it within about 15 minutes of paying and brought it up to the pro shop, where the staff became defensive. One employee was raising her voice, which was honestly shocking over what should’ve been a simple fix. A gentleman later confirmed the duplicate charge and said he’d process a refund—but never did. The charge is still on my account, and it honestly felt like they were just telling me what I wanted to hear so I would leave. The sad part is they can get away with it. The course is always busy and being city-run, it feels like there’s no accountability, no respect and overall just unprofessional. Trust the 1 star reviews, or come see for yourself, trust me it wont take long. Very frustrating experience overall.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but our experience at this golf course was extremely disappointing. From the moment we arrived, we were met with unprofessional and rude behavior. The gentleman handling the golf carts was unnecessarily disrespectful and spoke to us in a way that was both dismissive and unfriendly. Instead of feeling welcomed as paying customers, we felt like we were an inconvenience. Throughout our visit, several staff members were confrontational and seemed intent on harassing rather than helping guests. Rather than addressing concerns professionally, they approached situations with an attitude that felt hostile and uncalled for. What bothered us most was how degrading the overall experience became. We were spoken to in a condescending manner and treated with a lack of basic courtesy and respect. Customer service should never leave guests feeling embarrassed or belittled. Golf is supposed to be an enjoyable and relaxing experience, but unfortunately, this visit was anything but that. We left feeling frustrated and disappointed by the way we were treated. Based on our experience, we would not recommend this golf course and hope management takes steps to improve how customers are treated in the future.

Booked two tee times for 6 adults and told them ahead of time we’d have 3 young kids with us (not playing). No restrictions or waivers were mentioned. When we arrived, we paid in the clubhouse, then went outside to the starter to get our cart keys. The starter booth was empty, and since he had the keys, we couldn’t even get our gear or head to the tee. After waiting about 10 minutes, we had to go back inside just to find someone. Once we finally got to the first tee, we were hit with rules and waiver requirements that had never been communicated—despite mentioning the kids both on the phone and in the clubhouse. We had no issue complying and adjusted immediately—reorganized our groups from 2 and 4 into two groups of 3, had one group walk so the kids could ride properly, and let another group play through while we went back to sign waivers. The problem wasn’t the rules—it was how it was handled. The interaction was unnecessarily rude and caused even more delays before we could start. Despite adjusting, we were stopped again and accused of trying to play as a group of six and told we were being dishonest. We were repeatedly pressed about it before the starter eventually allowed the first group of 3 to tee off. On the second hole, the ranger approached the second group (including wives and kids) and aggressively claimed they were playing too slow—after just one hole—and suggested they should stay off the course if we weren’t serious players. That interaction upset people enough that two chose to stop participating entirely. To try to avoid further issues and increase pace, we dissolved the second group and continued as a single group of four, despite having already paid for all six. From there, it only got worse. The ranger followed us for multiple holes, drove into the fairway during play, and repeatedly pressured us about pace—even though we were waiting on groups ahead the entire time. On one hole, he questioned why we weren’t hitting while another group was still clearly within range, then mocked the idea that we could reach them. We still finished in 3h 40m—over 30 minutes faster than their posted pace—despite constant interruptions. The biggest issue was the staff. Every single person we dealt with was rude and confrontational. One bad interaction is one thing—this was consistent from start to finish. Easily the worst golf experience I’ve had. There are better options that actually treat customers with basic respect.

We had an absolutely terrible experience here. We came with 6 adults and 3 kids and were forced to rearrange at the tee box due to a strict 2-per-cart rule (including kids). The staff member handling it was rude, but we complied and even let the group behind us go ahead to avoid any delay. On the second hole, we were stopped and accused of delaying play and not separating—even though the rest of our group was already a hole ahead. From there, the marshal repeatedly followed us hole-to-hole, watching and interrupting us despite the fact that we were waiting on every tee due to backups ahead. Two of our players even stopped playing to reduce pressure and keep things moving. At one point, he argued that we “couldn’t hit that far,” which was simply untrue. Despite being blamed for slow play, we finished about 20 minutes ahead of the expected pace. The course itself was decent, but the staff made the entire experience stressful and frustrating. We’ve played many courses with our kids and have never been treated this poorly. Would not return. I would rather pay more than be treated this poorly again.
