Description

Highlands of Elgin is a premier modern public course, blending dramatic elevation changes, bold bunkering, and a stunning reclaimed-landscape design. Many holes feature wide fairways paired with challenging approaches into large, undulating greens. The back nine plays through quarry terrain, offering some of the most memorable visuals in the suburbs. Conditioning is consistently top-notch. It's one of Chicagoland's must-play public courses.

Best course in the area for the money, Hands down. The Course is always in good shape with a lot of risk and reward holes. Hard to get a good time though, and a no refund cancellation policy.. But super cheap so it makes sense.

Very nice course with enough lake, bunkers and huddles. Nicely designed course with lots of up and downs and tricky ones but with limited trees and rough around, you can freely power your shots through. I was bit disappointed when they told me what it costs over phone and when I went there with a buddy of mine, we have to pay 25% more or so. The price offered was only for residence was the answer. Should he not check before saying the price when you call. At least the lady who signed us should have honored but she did not even feel sorry that they did that to us. That was very disappointing

I was excited to play the Highlands because I heard good things about the layout. It’s an open links style course designed by Keith Foster who has a great pedigree of courses. My disappointment wasn’t so much with the design which requires strategic shot making, but with the greens. The weather was finally cooler today but the greens were slower than the worst public muni. I know they want the greens to be accessible to all levels of players, but there’s just no excuse for how slow these greens were today. So all chips and putts were almost always way short and it was difficult to adapt. That said, there are a lot of interesting holes that require club selection and commitment. The hazards and fescue (which had recently been trimmed, thank goodness) were very fair, but strategically placed. After the first hole there is a pond that smells very badly but it only lasts one tee box, but something clearly needs to be don’t to fix that. Other ponds appear to be going through eutrophication ( see pics) and this needs to be addressed or the ponds will get smelly and go away. I only paid $61 for 18 holes and a cart, as a senior on a Wednesday morning, but I wouldn’t pay more to play this track. They do have a good practice area/driving range so come early and warm up. The Grumpy Goat Tavern is welcoming and well appointed and the number of craft beers is impressive. I recommend the Highlands as a good local track, but they need to do something about the slow greens.

**Review:** I recently had the pleasure of playing a round at Highlands of Elgin on 8/17/24 and I must say, it’s one of the finest courses I've had the opportunity to experience. The layout is challenging yet fair, with well-maintained greens that roll true, and breathtaking views on nearly every hole. The staff was friendly, and the facilities were top-notch, making for an overall enjoyable day on the links. However, the one drawback to an otherwise perfect day was the limited service from the beverage cart. Unfortunately, the cart girl only came by twice during the entire round, which was a bit disappointing, especially on a warm day when staying hydrated is key. It would have been nice to see more frequent service to keep the experience consistent with the high standards of the course itself. That said, this is still a top-tier course that I would highly recommend to any golfer. A minor improvement in service would easily make it a five-star experience.
