Description

A Donald Ross original from the 1920s and home course of Augusta University, Forest Hills blends Golden Age strategy with modern conditioning. Ross's elevated greens and run offs demand creative short game options, while wide corridors tempt aggressive lines off the tee. The championship length makes it a regular host for high level collegiate events each spring. A full practice facility and player friendly clubhouse support the busy daily fee and university traffic. Despite its pedigree, the course remains welcoming and walkable for the public.

Review of Forest Hills Golf Club – Augusta, Georgia Forest Hills Golf Club is a true gem in Augusta. From the moment you arrive, you can feel the hospitality—everyone from the management to the membership and even the attendants are incredibly friendly. There’s just a great energy in the building, like you’re part of a welcoming golf family. The cart paths are in excellent shape, and I have to say—these carts are next-level. I normally hate GPS carts, but I broke my own rule here. That’s how smooth, clean, and high-tech they were. Absolute game-changer. Even though the greens were aerated during our visit, they were still rolling nicely. You can tell the grounds crew takes pride in keeping the course in great shape. The views across the course are stunning—hard to believe there’s anything more beautiful, but it does make you wonder what Augusta National must look like if this place is any indication. Inside, the service was just as impressive. The waitstaff was attentive, kind, and eager to help. It’s the little things that elevate an experience, and Forest Hills nails all the details. Home to the Augusta State University golf team—two-time national champions—you even get to see their dorms on the property, which adds a touch of prestige to the whole place. Overall, this course is remarkable. Great people, great conditions, and a great atmosphere. I’ll definitely be back.

The two stars listed above is for the A+ conditions the course was in, great work by the Superintendent and his crew. However, the rest of the experience today was rather unwelcoming. I, as a single signed up for a 9 am tee time with another three some last night via their online booking system. When I checked in, I finished payng and walked out to go hit some putts. At 8:51 I walked to the first tee and introduced myself to the people at the 9 am tee time (All Members) only to be told that they were a foursome and the pro shop moved me back. I was not informed of this when I checked in so I walked into the pro shop and explained the situation. The pro shop attendant got rather annoyed at me and told me to go after them, which is fine (It would be slow but I would play two balls.) However, given the circumstance that the members showed up with 4 when they only signed up for 3, the members should've been moved back and not the one person in the group who did everything correctly. Then while waiting to tee off I was informed by who seemed to the the head pro that he was going to pair me up with two other random golfers (Great guys enjoyed golfing with them)and squeeze us in before a party of 8 in two foursomes behind us. This created an incredibly slow round and backup on the course. Management clearly prioritizes members at this facility and has established a culture where members feel they can do whatever they want. The course was great but I will only return here as a last resort after this experience. Experiences like this are why people never return to a golf course or why golf has gotten a bad rap for being exclusive and unfriendly.

★★★★★ Hidden Gem in Augusta Forest Hills Golf Club is a classic Donald Ross design (1926) and a true hidden gem. I’ve played many Ross courses, including Pinehurst, Mid Pines, and Southern Pines, and this course is every bit as good—at a fraction of the price. It’s also the home course of the Augusta University men’s and women’s golf teams, which says a lot. Course conditions were outstanding, especially considering the dormant season, The bunkers are crisp and hand raked, just like they do at Augusta National a lot of places, Pinehurst included, even on their marquee courses, only die their teas and greens, at FHGC even fairways were green . The bunkers are crisp and hand raked, just like they do at Augusta National . The staff was welcoming and professional from start to finish. Shout out to Marc at the counter, and the gentleman who greeted me in the parking lot with a cart as soon as my car was parked. Top rate service. As a golf course owner, I look for operational excellence—and Forest Hills delivers. Highly recommended. This if you are coming to Augusta!

This is a Donald Ross design that they are struggling to get the greens to behave. If the greens were better, 5 stars all the way. I loved the course, but the greens weren’t good when I played it. Hopefully they have fixed that. The clubhouse sandwich at the turn was fantastic and I’d play here again just for the sandwich.

I played Forest Hills on February 28th and was charged $85, which I felt was not justified given the overall experience. While the course conditions were decent, I strongly advise against playing there due to poor pace-of-play caused by course management. The course prioritizes the Augusta State golf team, and if they take 4.5 to 5 hours to complete their round, other players are left waiting with no intervention from the course staff. Despite spending over $90 between golf and range balls, I received no support from the clubhouse when the college players caused significant delays. The staff simply responded with “sorry” rather than addressing the issue. The refusal of the college players to allow faster groups to play through only added to the frustration. Given these factors, I was highly disappointed with the experience and have decided not to return, recommending others to avoid the course as well due to its high price and poor management of pace of play. On a side note: They throw down green paint to make the course "look" better. Woodside, Reserve Club, Palmetto, and other top tier courses do not use paint, and their greens/fairways look awesome.. Do Better Forest Hills!
