This is a beautiful, well manicured golf course with spectacular views that we had the pleasure of playing while in town from Ohio. The staff was extremely polite and professional, and if we return in the future, we'll definitely be making a reservation to play here again. Highly recommend Ol' Colony!!

They keep the course in really good shape considering the heat are torrential rain we get down here. Easily the best public golf in town.

This review is an update of the scathing review I posted earlier this year (2026). The earlier review follows this update. Thanks to the heat, rain and hopefully some good greenskeeper work since late May, Ol’ Colony has blossomed! The conditions are so much improved it is now a pleasure to play the course. Is it perfect? No - hence the 4 rating. Other than the greens being slow, the course from tee to green plays and looks great! I do have concerns for later in the year when the grass goes dormant. Hopefully, the staff can work to not allow the course to return to the conditions I wrote about in March. And just a mention to the staff: based on my interactions, most everyone working there has been very helpful and accommodating! Here is my earlier review: I played this course many times over the years. I never had any negative feelings about it. Recently, I joined as a full member. Unfortunately I joined without seeing the course. Ol Colony is probably the worst conditioned course I have ever played. This is Tuscaloosa’s public golf showplace? It’s a nice layout with little to no upkeep and maintenance. My playing partners keep telling me it will green up eventually. I’m in for a year so I will see.

I have to say, this was one of the worst experiences I’ve had at a golf course. Checking in was simple enough, but everything went downhill immediately after. This was our first time coming here, and we weren’t given any clear instructions—no one told us where hole one was or that outside food, drinks, or coolers weren’t allowed. We were just trying to figure things out like anyone would at a new course. Within minutes, an older staff member came speeding up to us on a cart and immediately started being rude. Instead of calmly explaining anything, he was aggressive and talked down to us like we had intentionally done something wrong. It felt completely unnecessary and honestly pretty disrespectful. We would’ve gladly followed any rules if they had just been communicated. The way it was handled made us feel so unwelcome that we ended up leaving within 5 minutes of being there. The course itself might be nice, but the way we were treated overshadowed everything. The course might want to reconsider who they have interacting with customers, because that experience alone is enough to drive people away.

The course is especially beautiful in the spring and fall, offering great views and a relaxing atmosphere. Whether you’re playing a full 18, practicing your swing, or just enjoying the outdoors, Ol’ Colony delivers consistent quality and Southern hospitality. It’s a true Tuscaloosa favorite and one of the best values for golf in the region.
