Description

Glacier at Devil's Head Resort offers a dramatic northwoods golf experience, with tight fairways winding through thick trees and rugged terrain. Elevation changes and doglegs keep shotmaking front and center. It's a true test of control and course management. A scenic escape with teeth.

I enjoy coming here. The 70's architecture. The skiing is very good. The lift lines are small due to the multiple lift. The trails are exceptionally maintained. Night skiing is well lite. The bars and restaurants are fun. Hard to find a bad thing to say. Parking is plentiful.

I went snowboarding here for the first time and it was really awesome. The two people who trained us were super nice and helped us a lot, and they made learning easy and not scary. The place was really cool and it wasn’t very busy, which made it even better. I didn’t stay at the resort, I just went there to snowboard, but it was still an amazing experience and I had a lot of fun.

I really love Devil's Head. It gives hot tub time machine vibes and I love it. It's a throw back for sure, but that's the charm of the older ski hills that deserve some love. The place needs improvements, yes, but it is a great ski racing hill and we need to keep skiing great and this small midwest hill does just that.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5 Stars My boyfriend and I stayed at Devil’s Head Ski Resort for a 3-day trip (Sunday–Tuesday). It was my very first time skiing, and it was my boyfriend’s first time back on skis in about a decade. Overall, we had a decent experience, but there were some major shortcomings— especially for beginners and weekday guests— that prevent us from rating it higher. The Good: We appreciated that weekday rates were slightly discounted, and the rental process itself was fairly easy. Rentals included everything we needed— boots, skis, poles, and helmets; and once we had everything, it was smooth sailing. We booked a private lesson, and our instructor Carl was fantastic. He was patient, knowledgeable, and even spent extra time with us since he didn’t have another lesson afterward, which we really appreciated. We also spent time at Devil’s Den, the on-site bar, and had an excellent experience thanks to Shawn, the bartender. He was attentive, made great drinks, offered helpful recommendations, and was genuinely great to talk to. He even accommodated a late food order, which made a big difference in our stay. The hotel room itself was basic but clean and comfortable. I especially liked how easy it was to adjust the room temperature. We were also allowed to check in about an hour early, which was a nice bonus. All hotel staff—from the front desk to housekeeping—were polite and friendly. There’s also a resort shop with a good selection of merch and ski apparel. Prices were high, but not unreasonable for a resort, and the blonde woman working the counter was very sweet and helpful. My boyfriend even picked up a baseball cap there. The Bad: Despite offering lessons, the resort is not very beginner-friendly. When we picked up our rental boots, there was zero guidance on how to loosen or adjust them, and staff were not receptive to questions. We spent about 15 minutes just trying to figure out how to put them on ourselves. We also weren’t given ski poles when we picked up our skis, which forced us to leave our private lesson to go back and get them—cutting into time we had paid for. Helmet sizing was also not explained or prioritized, which felt like a safety oversight. We quickly realized why weekday rates were discounted: nearly all restaurants and bars were closed. Dante’s, the Cornucopia Room, and Avalanche were either only open Fridays and Saturdays or closed too early on Sunday for us to make it after skiing. The Devil’s Head website did not make this clear. It also did not have updated restaurant menus. The discounted rate does not make up for having only one dining option available the entire stay, and it didn’t feel very “resort-like” because of it. We ended up leaving the property just to find lunch. One reason we chose weekday skiing was to avoid crowds as beginners, which was nice… but it came at the cost of amenities. Additionally, when we arrived to check in, there was no one at the front desk. Staff were in the back chatting, and we weren’t helped until someone returned from their break and noticed us waiting. I understand things slow down during the week, but having no one available when guests walk in is not a great first impression. Overall: I think this resort could be enjoyable if you’re an experienced skier or snowboarder and visit on a weekend when everything is open. However, it is not accommodating to beginners or weekday guests. With better beginner support and more transparency about limited weekday amenities, this could have been a much stronger experience.

Horrible experience for first-time skiers. We came mainly to give our son his very first skiing experience, but the entire process was extremely confusing and stressful. The first day was especially difficult. We arrived one hour early, and it was still not enough time to get ready. It was bitterly cold, and we had to drive around the resort—front and back—then walk up and down through snow just to find where we needed to go. I had to ask at least five staff members before finally locating the ski school and rental area. There was no clear obvious signage indicating where to get tickets, rentals, or lessons. I tried calling their customer service number for directions, but it was only an automated machine instead of a real person. The online booking system was also very frustrating. I was forced to purchase a lift ticket and rental for my child because there was no rental-only option on the website. There was no clear information about onsite availability, and I was worrying about rental may not be guaranteed if not booked in advance. My son is 5 years old (turning 6 in a few days) is eligible for the under 6 free ticket and we ended up never using the lift ticket, which cost $85. When I tried to get a refund they said since my son used the bunny hill, the lift ticket cannot be refunded. I expect many families with zero skiing experience—like us—end up paying unnecessarily because this information is not made clear. Overall, this was a very disappointing and poorly organized experience. The resort seriously needs clearer signage, better customer support, and more transparent booking options.
