Description

The Palmer Course at Speidel Golf Club (Oglebay) is the resort’s more open, resort-friendly complement, offering generous looks off the tee with plenty of scoring opportunities if you’re swinging well. It still has teeth—strategic bunkers and approach demands show up throughout—but the overall feel is more inviting than its counterpart. The routing is memorable, with scenic elevation, strong sightlines, and a “vacation golf” rhythm that makes it fun for a wide range of handicaps. Conditions and wind can add meaningful challenge, especially on longer holes where you have to commit to club selection. If you want the classic Oglebay resort round that blends playability with a legitimate test, Palmer is a great choice.

Our host at the Speidel bar and grill, makes our annual visit to the festival of lights, very enjoyable. He always remembers us! Has our extra pitcher of mountian dew ready! Very friendly, hard working and loves to joke with us. Food is good and made fresh. Wish they'd bring back the Mac and cheese wedges and fresh made potato chips.

I have been to the resort 15 times over the years and am disappointed at the experience I had at the golf courses last week. In fairness, the golf professional staff and food and bev team in the Speidel Grill were all lovely people and the course layouts are fun. Also, this review only pertains to golf; the food and service at the Oglebay Lodge as well as the experience staying at the cabins were all great. However, I experienced rudeness from the bag "boys," on course bev cart staff, and course marshals. We are good players who play fast, don't hold up the course, and are not loud or obnoxious, yet still everyone went out of their way to be rude to us. The first cart guy was grumpy and didn't acknowledge me after asking him a question while the 2nd cart guy just sat on one of the carts not doing anything while 15 to 20 guys were arriving. Our sand buckets on the cart were empty as we were getting ready to go (HIS job to refill them ahead of time which he failed) so I asked if he had any spares and he got super annoyed and acted like I was asking him to move a mountain. Then on the course, we asked 2 question about beer selection at a turn stand BECAUSE THE POSTED OPTIONS ON THE SIGN WERE WRONG and his response was "is this a quiz or are you going to buy something." It was said in a grumpy manner and not at all tongue-in-cheek. I can't understate how angry that made all 4 of us. We also had 2 separate marshals drive within 10 feet of us and ignore us after I tried to engage them with friendly banter (I wasn't at all complaining to them about anything either). I have played all over the country and have never been treated like I was this trip. Also, the Jones course is consistently terrible year after year. Everyone there blames it on the weather and while that can be valid in any one year, that can't be the excuse year over year. At some point you have to realize your superintendent doesn't know what he's doing. Again in fairness, the Palmer course was in pretty good shape albeit a little worse than prior trips. Lastly, the back 9 on the Jones course was so slow that we had 7 groups stacked up across 2 sequential holes the whole way and it took almost 6 hours for the round. Not a marshal in site to help with pace of play, and when I broke down and finally called the golf shop to ask if they could do anything, there was no answer after repeated calls. Management should be ashamed of how much of a blind eye you've clearly turned to your problems.

All courses-Crispin, Palmer, Jones: what a fall from grace. Crispin is unplayable. Diseased grass, burnt out, minimal maintenance being done to the course. Palmer is burnt out badly. What use to be the crown jewel of the resort now is taken care of like a half funded muni course. It’s sick to me how much they charge people to “play and stay”. Range balls have less dimples than a bowling ball. Jones course also is burnt out. Tee boxes are only divots, crab grass, and poorly seeded sand boxes. There was 1 green patch on the course, hole 11 green. Red shirted “greeters” at cart pickup. Talk about rude and disrespectful. Again, these old timers are the face of the club when you pull in. Put some more friendly faces out there and not old grouchy men. It was a good run oglebay.

Had a 15 man golf outing and was more then accommodated for. Room was cleaned out quick upon arrival, golf courses were unbelievable, breakfast was beyond restaurant level and included in our package, and didn't have to wait for any range service or practice greens at all. Long live Ogle Bay!
