Description

Discovery Bay Golf Club near Port Townsend is a rustic 18-hole layout on the site of Washington's first golf course. The course blends vintage character with a natural, no-frills design and spectacular water views. It's a little rough around the edges, but incredibly charming for those who enjoy classic, old-school golf.

I’d love to love this course. But as others have noted, the maintenance is just so terrible it can only be two stars. You can tell the owners loved this course 20 years ago but it’s just a mess now. Greens have tons of weeds and are bumpy all over, the sand pits are full of dandelions and hard as a rock, and the fairways are just fields of daisies, which is pretty to look at but I lost 5 balls in the middle of the fairway! Makes a round of golf incredibly frustrating not to mention expensive. Sadly I won’t be going back unless they can invest in some upkeep. Photo is one of the fairways. At least 9 of them look like this. Not kidding.

Very nice course indeed. IMHO better than those in Sequim with higher rating and price. This is a course I would play everyday. Conditions may vary, but you cannot change the layout. Front 9 was good, but I really enjoyed the back 9 with some elevation changes. Beautiful sceneries as well.

I’ll start with the cons: this course has seen better days. Pretty dried out and the teeboxes are frankly bad. That being said, I actually really liked the course. It’s a good track. Good mix of doglegs, some holes had good elevation changes, some longer par 5s, good balance of yardages on the par 3s. The greens are in above average shape. The back nine is up on the hill behind the course. Holes 11-13 really feel like you’re miles from civilization and I was expecting to see a bear, elk or Sasquatch around the next corner. Really cool stretch of holes. Not overly busy and I believe they space tee times out 15mins apart which was great. Many places are squeezing em every 7-9 mins, and it’s nice not to feel rushed or crowded. If you’re planning on walking, the back 9 is a hike. You not only have to get up the aforementioned mountain but it’s just a lot of walking. You also finish on 18 like 400 yards away from the clubhouse. Bring enough water as well as there are no water fountains on the course. Summary: good track especially for the cost, great value. Strenuous back 9 for walkers, but well worth it. Tee boxes pretty bad, but still a good experience.

Greens: pretty poor shape. Really slow. Fairways: these were the part of the course in the best shape. Sand traps: basically all rocks. Didn't even try to hit out of them as I didn't want to damage my clubs. Price: 50ish a person for 18 with a cart with is ok but feels overpriced for the course conditions. Dog friendliness: really the only reason that we came out here and it was fun having my dog out for a round, but they don't have any information on the type of pesticides or how recent they were used. So I wouldn't feel comfortable with my dog walking the course. Range: Saturday afternoon and the range was out of balls because they don't pick them. I don't understand that for a Saturday and I saw some people leave since that is why they were there.

Established in 1925 claims the oldest public golf course in Washington. The front nine is more country style the last nine designed later on is really cool. Green throughout are challenging , Don't over read them. Keep an eye out for the wildlife.
