Description

Hunting Hawk near Richmond is known as a modern, well-presented daily-fee course with enough length and strategy to feel like a true test. The design typically asks you to drive with a plan—landing areas can narrow and hazards reward choosing the correct side to open up approach angles. It’s a course where you can score if you play smart, but it also has teeth when you’re impatient, especially around greens and in recovery situations. Conditioning and pace are often a highlight, which makes it a common pick for outings and repeat play. Overall, it’s a strong Greater Richmond option when you want a polished round that still demands real shotmaking.

I am an amateur who just got back into golf after a 20-year break. Over the past month I’ve played Hunting Hawk several times as a single, and after reading some of the reviews I felt compelled to share my experience. Every time I’ve been there, the staff has been extremely nice and welcoming. Considering it is winter in Richmond—and we just came through one of the worst ice storms in decades with more than two weeks of below-freezing temperatures—it’s impressive how well they have maintained the course. Taking care of a property this large is not easy, and for this time of year I think they have done a very good job. The pro shop is also well kept, and I noticed many of their prices are actually lower than the big-box golf stores. As a business owner myself, I know how challenging it is to operate and maintain a property like this, especially a public golf course that depends on the support of the local community. We are fortunate to have a course like this available to play. Hunting Hawk may not be Pine Valley or Pebble Beach, but for what it is—a local public course—it provides a very enjoyable experience. I’ve had nothing but positive interactions there, and I appreciate the effort they put into keeping the course open and playable, especially during difficult winter conditions. I wish them continued success and look forward to playing there again.

More worried about sending people out to demand they move their cart that’s 10 yards off the tee box than they are keeping pace of play normal. The quality of the course has absolutely tanked. Not a single tee box looks like it did a year ago and the bunkers are beyond unplayable. Everyone from Jacob to Jeff doesn’t seem to know an ounce of respect or customer service. This course reminds me exactly of the crossings a few years back as it goes down hill. Outrageous pricing and we know it’s not used on maintenance and it darn sure isn’t used on training for customer service. Save yourself the 6 hours it’ll take at 10am on a weekday and hitting off the cart path for your tee box.

Love the course. Always plays well and the staff is great. Food is decent and not overpriced. It seems like every whole here has a very distinct personality. The course will offer you a variety of options to test your skills. The relatively flat course but it does have water introduced on many holes. You should have ample opportunity to use your driver here at 7200 yards. I only have a couple issues with the course . They have a great short game practice facility but it seems to be closed frequently. Update : 6/1/25 - the fairways and greens are in terrific shape, big improvement. About 3 years ago they changed how they treat the grass and it is really paying dividends. The course used to be very Brown coming off of the winter and going into the spring that's simply not the case any longer.

I’m not sure about the earlier post about the tee boxes when the picture is of the approach to the tee box? Course is in great shape! Check these pictures out . Taken two days ago.

Great moderate level course! Stay out the rough cause it’s not easy to get out! Lovely course setting and staff are amazing as always. Plus I used to work here when I was in high school so it’s always been good to me!
