TPC San Antonio (Oaks)

Description

The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio, designed by Greg Norman with Sergio Garcia as a consultant, is the host of the PGA TOUR’s Valero Texas Open. It’s a long, demanding layout that emphasizes accuracy over raw power, with narrow corridors and natural bunkering cut into the rugged terrain. The greens are firm and undulating, testing even the best players’ short-game skills. Its design reflects Norman’s philosophy of tough, strategic golf, often requiring careful positioning to set up reasonable scoring chances. The course is both beautiful and punishing, offering a true championship test.

Played the Canyons today, overall it was a nice experience. I'm a little surprised/doubtful that Pete Dye designed this course. It's fairly mundane, bordering on boring, very much not what I would expect from a Dye course. I expect to hit a good shot, then get to where I expect the ball to be and it very much not be there. Other than the meh layout, the conditions were good, the staff was friendly, and the facilities are what you'd expect from a course of this caliber. Lastly, paying to park is super annoying.

Played yesterday- was disappointed with the condition of the greens! For the $400 price would have thought the course would have been pristine but was just the opposite. Would never play this course again. Grill closed , lack of ice/water on course with temps around 100.

I recently played TPC San Antonio and left feeling pretty underwhelmed given the high green fee of $350. For that price, I expected a more memorable experience and better service overall. The arrival was anticlimactic, no sense of welcome or excitement, and the practice facility felt average at best. The restaurant was closed, so there was nowhere to grab a bite before the round other than some snacks. Other than the staff in the golf shop, the service throughout was minimal and didn’t match what you’d expect from a top-tier resort course. Course conditions were good, but the layout itself didn’t feel particularly special or memorable compared to other courses I’ve played in this price range. Honestly, the entire experience felt more like a $125–$150 round than a $350 destination round. I think many golfers come here expecting a ‘PGA Tour level’ experience and walk away disappointed, like I did. If you’re planning to play here, just know you’re paying a premium mostly for the TPC name and not necessarily for a standout golf experience.

I’m a member at another TPC course and had been looking forward to playing the Oaks course for some time. Terrible. As others pointed out conditions awful, staff service very unhelpful (they had no idea what was going on and didn’t even know halfway house was closed and couldn’t give options for food), no water on course! To top it off the layout isn’t even nice. I paid cart fees only but honestly not even worth that :(. Later in the week I played a muni in Austin and it was sadly (though good for the Austin public) way better than Oaks course. A head scratcher that a TPC course could be in this shape.

Quite a gem to have in San Antonio but honestly was underwhelmed with it overall. Maybe it's just the aeration season but the greens were sub-par. Very technical with many bunkers. Not very scenic overall. Don't get me wrong, it's a gem of a place but maybe my expectations were too high. Will visit again.
