For having not played golf, I had a great time on the course. My daughter is a golfer and was giving me pointers and said the course was nicely designed. We had a great afternoon golfing and everyone there from the course managers, store front, cart rentals and other patrons on the course were very friendly and helpful.

The course we played was Loma and not in the best condition. Some fairways had muddy spots from leaking water lines, there were large areas of crabgrass in the fairways, some greens had large bare spots, and others had very little grass. All the greens were playing very slow. The tee boxes were not set up for play. The markers left off the tee boxes. The drinking stations were in metal shack that made the water very warm. Ft Sam has two golf courses and are struggling to maintain them. Ft Sam leadership should close one to properly maintain the other.

Good place to enjoy 9 to 18 holes! La Loma is challenging yet, very doable. I was able to make birdie on hole 15 and it was my first time doing so at that hole. We played all 18 holes walking and it was indeed a hot day. Bring lots of water to stay hydrated. I will be getting a golf cart next time so we don't take so long to finish! Note: if you know you're not going to be done playing the 9 or 18 holes walking, you need to park by the Ft. Sam Houston Inn(hotel) because the gate gets locked at night.

Extremely disappointed with how this course is being run right now, Robert ran things much better. I’ve been playing this course for 9 years now and I consider it my home course, it’s not the greatest course in the city by any means but it’s always accessible and a pleasant experience. Today I tried getting on the course as a single and I’ve almost never had issues doing this in the last 9 years but today was different. The parking lot was packed and that’s never a good sign, but everyone seemed to be in the club house or conversing outside after their round. I walked in the clubhouse and simply asked “when would you be able to get me on?” and I was told “two hours”, I was confused because there were no carts lined up at the tee boxes like I’ve seen in the past when they were all booked up. I followed up with “could I squeeze in with another group?” and again I was met with “nope, two hours”. I made my way outside to the putting green and 5-7 minutes pass when a single golfer tees off on Loma, so I was again confused by what I was told but I kept putting. After 13 minutes I had only seen one person tee off, so I made my way inside and shared what I had seen with the girl behind the counter and again she says “I can’t get you on the course for 2 hours”. I’m not trying to be difficult, but I can’t seem to wrap my mind around why I couldn’t tee off on Salado. I’m probably a 12 handicap and move pretty quick on the course so I wouldn’t hold up any groups. The girl with the very chapped lips and the glasses seems to be very new and uneducated about how to do her job, she wasn’t rude by any means just new. Also, the course is notorious for being a little rough and dry in some areas, yet the turn away business and keep people off the course when there’s clearly space. This may have been my last visit there after all that crap.

It is a good course. Carts that run well and greens that are a bit slow, but very receptive to good wedge and iron shots. The staff is a different story. They are impatient, demeaning, and generally unfriendly towards visitors and veterans alike. Expect an overall unpleasant experience if you have to spend more than 5 minutes interacting with anyone other than the bald gentlemen with the long goatee. He is a pleasant man and I always hope to see him when I walk though the double doors. It's a shame, that I, a combat veteran, have to deal with such immature middle aged individuals who roll their eyes, raise their voice, and throw petty power trip fits over routine requests. Nobody who comes to this facility with goodwill and manners, looking forward to a nice day of golf, should have their mood spoiled by what should be a routine interaction. For any JBSA staff who might read this, I have a name for you: Tony Torres. Please help this individual understand the value in positive interaction and courtesy. Many of us who play your course are Veterans of Foreign Wars who are just trying to have a little peace in all of the fray. He should not roll his eyes at people. He should not bark commands while refusing to make eye contact. He should be helpful and treat customers with respect.
