The worst golf course I’ve ever played. The “fairways” are not manicured to be fairways at all. The tee boxes are not groomed. Most of the cart paths are dirt roads or just stop. See pictures. Manager asked us how we were at the turn, so we commented on the fairways and how it rough it was. He was very kind and understanding and offered to refund us and did do so. When we proceeded to make the turn, he told us we could not continue playing because he refunded us…. Very overpriced fee for the state of the course. Thankful for the refund, but will not ever return. *Update in response to owner’s comment- we left and played another course nearby that had the same amount of rain and the course looked beautiful. It’s unfortunate when a business owner wishes bad karma on someone who is giving honest feedback. No accountability and blaming God… lol. Good luck.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I’ve been playing Deer Run Golf Club in West Tawakoni, Texas for about a year now, and it’s been great to see how much the owners have invested in improving the course. They’ve worked hard to bring it back to life after the tough Texas freezes a few years ago. While there are still two temporary greens, the other 16 are in excellent condition — smooth, well-maintained, and fun to play. This course has a ton of character, plenty of elevation changes, and scenic views of Lake Tawakoni that make it stand out from other courses in the area. It’s a challenging layout with plenty of wildlife — I see deer crossing the fairways most mornings. I started out with their Buck Club membership, which offered great value, but was so impressed with the progress and the ownership’s commitment that I upgraded to the Platinum Membership this past May. What I love most is how casual and welcoming the atmosphere is. Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, it’s a great place to play. If you’re looking for a scenic, laid-back golf course near Dallas with great value and a passionate ownership team, Deer Run Golf Club is absolutely worth checking out. It’s earned a permanent spot in my rotation.

Played here for the first time in a hot summer day. Overall, Deer Run is an enjoyable course. About half the par 4 and par 5 holes have lightly tree lined fairways with open windows from the tees. The other half have trees strategically placed within the windows to the fairways, making these tee shots a nice challenge to make you think. About 1/4 of the par 4 and 5 holes are left to right doglegs to be navigated. Great for faders/slicers! The fairways, rough and greens are Bermuda grass. The fairways give you nice lies, most of them flat, but a few of the fairways had scattered areas of hard pan. I hope this gets corrected. The rough does not extend far off the fairway on most of the holes, but it is very playable. On almost all holes you can play from the trees although you will have to play out below the canopies more often than not. There is water in about 1/3 of the holes, mostly in the way of small ponds with think growth around them just off the fairways. You are dead if you hit it in these areas. On the day we played, the greens hadn’t been cut in a few days. They were a little shaggy and slow. The course did tell all players that they would be watering greens during the day, and that meant a few of the holes we played into after watering were even slower. This was more of annoyance than anything. The course has a great layout, and the white tees were a perfect length for our group of four with handicaps ranging from 8 to 25. What you may not see in other reviews are comments about the practice range. It is outfitted with full Top Tracer technology. This was really nice to dial in distances before the round. The range also has mats with alignment grids which was also a nice touch. Overall, I was pleased with the facilities and the course at Deer Run. It was a very good value and an enjoyable day on the links. If you’re visiting Lake Tawakoni and want to sneak in a round, give Deer Run a go. Hit ‘em straight! Cheers!

Dead bare greens. No grass on tee boxes or fairways. The range balls on 9 were all there from the day before and white! This should be a nice course. It’s only 30 minutes from so much. Someone please buy this and fix it !

1st time at this course. Owner James was extremely nice and grounds crew I met were also friendly and helpful. Great 18hole rural course. Challenging dog legs and some greens bordering the lake. Area was dry but the course was in great shape. Saw mixed reviews on Deer Run but I was pleasantly surprised by this course. Pace of play was good and all holes were challenging. Was told the new owner brought this course back from the dead. I think this is a great course. Look forward to coming back to this gem. Love these courses when I travel.
