Decided to be brutally honest, hopefully taken as such. First, the course is owned by the city of Rowlett but managed by American Golf Corporation. The latter, for those who have been around for a while, seem to have a history of destroying golf clubs/courses.
We used to consider Waterview our home course when it opened - absolutely spectacular bent grass greens, fairways and rest of the course was immaculate. It got really hard to book times, and it was packed with tournaments. Until .. it completely fell apart and wasn’t worth the short drive from nearby Rockwall and Wylie. Greens overtaken by weeds - in some cases we just picked up if we didn’t make the first putt and moved on. No water on fairways left them thin, hard and just really bad.
It has been 4-5 years since we played out there, until Sunday. Good news … the new Bermuda (some hybrid of sorts) greens were again spectacular - and lightning fast! Great job to the Superintendent!!!
But, the rest of the course was still worthless and virtually the same as before. Worse, get off the cart path, headed further away from the fairway or to the fairway, and you need one of those semi-truck driver seats that has shocks and cushions to absorb all of the bumps. Fairways weren’t much better. Most tee boxes were 80% void of grass, apparently nobody fixes divots.
Pro Shop is basic. Never made it back to the grill. Cartgirl didn’t get out there until almost 11:00am, and had all kinds of excuses and complaints.
I know this isn’t a very good review, and it only got 2 stars because of the greens. But I miss the original Waterview - fun, challenging, great greens, always in fabulous condition, fun people and right between our homes. I hope the Advisory Board takes notice, and the city pumps more money back into the course - and the contract with AGC is ending.
In the end, it’s not worth $70-75 on the weekend, and even less when you can drive somewhere fairly close, pay $15-20 more and get great conditions from tee thru the green along with fun people!
