Description

Known locally as The River at Lake Royale, this course flows through a lakeside community northeast of Raleigh. Tree-lined corridors open to greens edged by gentle mounding, asking for controlled trajectories. From the tips it provides enough length to test mid-irons, but forward tees keep it friendly. Breezes off the water can make club selection tricky late in the day. Overall it's a relaxed, fun round with classic Carolina feel.

Walked 4 holes in Feb'26. Layout looks pretty bad. Sharp doglegs with water and OB all over. Little ponds that just shouldn't have been put where they are. Wanted to love it if that matters.

Another day, another course review. Shot 91 on a not terrible day, just some big numbers on particular holes. It's rare I give out 5s only because the criteria I set is particular. Usually it's value vs conditions. This course is one of my favorites despite being an hour drive. At $55, this is one of the best courses around, just a step down in condition vs private clubs. Tee boxes 4/5 - There are a couple tee boxes that have issues that brings this score down. A couple holes have shaded tee boxes that grass fails to grow good on. Fairways 4.5/5 - They're not perfect, but there aren't patches missing and the like. It's not super plush, but allows for good shots. Greens 4/5 - These greens are tricky because they are more on the soft side so they roll at a 9.5/10. The fringes are upkept enough to putt from. I managed to go without hitting into a bunker all day but they didn't look too tough, sand was fluffy. Layout 5/5 - This is a short course, even the tips are only 6300, but half the course is doglegs. Forced layups are also sprinkled throughout with some risk/reward holes you can opt to gamble for better position. My playing partner today got an eagle thanks to a gamble that paid off on the drivable par 4 7th. Amenities 4/5 - The range isn't that wide, but they have non range Taylormade balls which is nice. No pitching/chipping green, but there is a putting green. All in all, a worthy play especially for the price.

Awesome day golfing! Friendly staff, excellent grounds. The fairways and greens are nice! Make sure to stop at the turn for some great food at the clubhouse restaurant!

This was my first visit to River Golf & Country Club. It's a beautiful golf course. My son and I played 18 holes and drove a cart. The course itself is challenging. There are some long par 5's. Several holes have water hazards. Bunkers are spread nicely around the greens. We used a Groupon deal to play and it cost approximately $30 for two people and a cart. Overall I was pleased with the experience. There were a few greens that were not in good condition but it appeared that work was being done to improve them. It definitely recommend playing this course. The golf is fun and the natural beauty of creation is peaceful.

First time back in about 1.5 yrs. I had heard the course was in great shape which after playing I did not see that great shape. The front nine was still pretty bad. I will say the back nine was in better shape. The greens were very nice I guess that’s where they concentrate mostly. The tee boxes were terrible need a lot of work. The fairways were just ok. The front nine could be better if it was more open, it is closed in by trees to let course get what it needs to be a great course. The course has a nice lay out and some challenging holes. I would say it is not worth the drive to play but if you live close by give it a play see what your thoughts are. If you do want to play the course I would differently play on Tuesday it is $30 play & ride they call it throwback Tuesday. The normal price is $52.
