Description

Shark River is a popular Monmouth County public course known for an honest, traditional test and a layout that can get demanding when conditions are firm. The course rewards golfers who keep the ball in play and manage approach distances thoughtfully, because tree lines and hazards can punish sloppy misses. It’s a great barometer course: if you’re striking irons well and putting with confidence, you can score; if not, the course will expose it quickly. Many holes ask you to choose conservative targets, because short-siding around greens can lead to difficult up-and-downs. The vibe is classic county golf—busy, community-forward, and built around fundamentals rather than resort spectacle. If you’re looking for a strong public round in Monmouth County with real shot demands, Shark River is a great pick.

While the condition of the course is comparable to many local private country clubs, as soon as you encounter the staff, you will be brought back to reality. With a few exceptions, most of the county employees here will grunt at you in the morning and are unaccommodating. Their demeanor is such that you are bothering them when you ask a question or approach the starter. On the course, slow play is permitted (and the norm), but if you wanted to play a 3 hour round at 7 am, you will be scolded by maintenance. I can comfortably say that the motor vehicle commission surpasses the county golf system in terms of friendliness and service. I bet most of the staff don't even realize that they are in the service industry. They seem to just be there to clock in for the health insurance and benefits. Monmouth County has invested heavily in these courses in the last decade to make them magnificent recreational centers for residents. The next step would be some basic training in hospitality and guest service. I'm not expecting Ritz-Carlton service, but Courtyard Marriott would be refreshing.

Good course. Very walkable. Practice putting green. No warm up range or chipping area.

I’m not one to write reviews, but I paid 79 dollars in county and a friend paid 103 today. The shape of the course was pretty bad compared to the other Monmouth courses. Fairways burnt, chewed up. Tee boxes in rough shape. The areas around the green and rough were in bad condition. I know we haven’t had much rain, but seems like they’re lacking on irrigation. On top of that the cart girl came up to us and had 1 hot dog left and no condiments… This is NOT a 100 dollar course. If you’re not gonna be able to maintain the course well, then drop the prices to a fair level.

Great muni track. All Monmouth courses are good. 18 has to be the longest par 5 in the county. Greens are always in good shape. Fun, fun, fun!

As some of the more recent reviews have mentioned, I too have recently experienced poor service from their staff. A Shark River Golf employee purposely hung up on me, twice, while I was trying to obtain a receipt from a previous visit. At my third attempt, another employee suggested that I "didnt explain what I wanted properly", as if that was good enough reason for hanging up on someone. This treatment suggests a lack of appreciation for customers and I would caution against bringing clients, or friends, to this establishment due to the staff's apparent lack of professionalism and courtesy.
