Description

Berkshire Valley is a public course set on a large Highlands property with sweeping, “top-of-the-ridge” views that feel different from most New Jersey golf. The layout plays across rolling ground near Green Pond Mountain, so elevation and wind can influence club selection more than you’d expect in the state. It’s a strong test from the tee because the best angles into greens often require you to pick the correct side of the fairway. The course is also known for variety—holes change direction, terrain shifts, and you’re asked to hit different shot shapes and trajectories over the round. Because it’s in more open, elevated terrain, conditions can change quickly, and smart players adjust targets rather than forcing pins. If you like scenic golf that still makes you think, Berkshire Valley is a memorable public option.

Berkshire Valley Golf Course is, without question, one of the most spectacular public courses in New Jersey—maybe anywhere. It’s easy to see why it lands in the state’s top 10 every single year, because the combination of jaw-dropping views and immaculate course conditions make this a golfing experience you’ll never forget. The magic begins before you even hit a ball. The drive up into Oak Ridge is beautiful on its own, winding through rolling hills, farmland, and quiet countryside, and then the property suddenly opens up in front of you in the most breathtaking way. Booking a tee time was a breeze, quick and straightforward, and from the moment I stepped onto the property I could tell this round was going to be something special. The views are absolutely awe-inspiring. As you stand on the first tee box, perched high above the valley, you’re greeted with sweeping panoramas of Green Pond Mountain and the lush landscape stretching out for miles. It feels like you’re golfing on top of the world. And it doesn’t stop there—almost every hole has a unique vantage point that makes you pause for a second before swinging. There are elevated tee shots where you can see forever, valleys framed by thick forests, and fairways that look like they’ve been painted onto the mountainside. It’s hard to keep your mind on your swing when you’re surrounded by scenery this stunning. This isn’t just golf—it feels like “God’s Country,” and Berkshire Valley truly feels like “God’s Golf Course.” And the conditions… they’re nothing short of world-class. The fairways are pristine—lush, tightly mown, and perfectly striped so that every lie feels like you’re hitting off a practice mat. The greens are lightning quick yet pure, rolling smooth and true, and they demand both creativity and precision. You’ll be tested, but in the most rewarding way possible. The bunkers are beautifully maintained, raked to perfection, and filled with soft white sand that wouldn’t be out of place at a private country club. Even the rough deserves mention—it’s thick enough to be a real challenge if you stray, but always consistent and fair. It’s clear the grounds crew here treats this course with the utmost pride and care, and the result is playing conditions that rival (and in some cases surpass) the best private tracks I’ve been on. The layout itself is an absolute gem. Every hole has character, from dramatic downhill par 4s to challenging uphill approaches and strategic par 5s that make you think through every shot. A few of the front nine holes can be especially tricky, requiring careful strategy off the tee and precise approaches into well-guarded greens. But that’s part of the fun—Berkshire Valley challenges you without ever feeling unfair. The elevation changes are dramatic but never gimmicky, and the routing keeps things fresh from the first hole to the eighteenth. You’ll need every club in your bag, you’ll face choices between conservative and aggressive play, and you’ll be rewarded for good execution at every turn. And while it’s tough in spots, it’s also incredibly fun—a true balance that not many courses achieve. What makes all of this even more remarkable is the value. For what you get—the scenery, the pristine course conditions, the challenging but fair layout—you’d expect to be paying private club rates. Instead, Berkshire Valley offers all of this at a fraction of the cost. It’s the definition of a hidden gem that delivers a five-star experience every time you tee it up. I can’t recommend Berkshire Valley enough. This isn’t just another round of golf—it’s an experience that blends the beauty of nature with a championship-caliber course maintained in near-perfect condition. It’s no wonder it consistently ranks among the very best in New Jersey. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU COME PLAY HERE. Come for the views, stay for the immaculate course conditions, and leave with memories of playing one of the most beautiful and well-kept public golf courses in the country.

Favorite course in the area. Start at the top of a hill/mountain and work your way down. Great views. Starter can be a bit grumpy but course is well maintained. Will definitely keep playing here.

Horrible. I have been there a few times over last 2 years and was great. Went in 5/27/25 at 10:50. Started us on 9th hole (not 10th, but 9th). Pace of play was ridiculous. Fairways were nothing but divots and greens had “tractor” marks etc. No way will I go there again this year. Never mind on a Tuesday it was OVER $90!!! They should be ashamed. Can’t believe it went from one of the most beautiful, well maintained courses around (still scenic from afar) to a DOG TRACK.

We didn't finish 18 holes because the rain was pouring and came and went multiple times for an hour. However, I can still review the course based on the 9 holes I played. The staff is friendly, and the greens are tough but clean! It starts with a hill on the 1st hole and has a narrow fairway. The course offers a beautiful view, and the fairway is very well maintained. One downside is that the carts seem a bit old and don't have a rain cover to protect your clubs. They do have a water fountain at the clubhouse, which is a plus. I will definitely come back, especially to use my rain check credits.

Excellent golf course. One of my favorites in the area, public or private. The first 6 holes are an absolute gauntlet. Well designed, lots of holes are attackable, but also have a good risk/reward choice off the tee. Challenging, but always feels like a fair challenge.
