Description

Forest Country Club is a traditional nine hole private course rooted in post war Mississippi golf. Expect narrow fairways framed by mature trees, plus compact greens that place a premium on accuracy. From the back tees the course stretches just over 3,000 yards, but it plays longer thanks to doglegs and protected approaches. The vibe is relaxed and member centric, with a steady diet of leagues and mixers. A driving range and simple practice facilities make it easy to warm up before heading out.

Very friendly service at the club house restaurant. Barb, is a real sweetheart, full of conversation and offering advice on the menu items while constantly refilling your tea. Had the pulled pork sandwich with chips and Barb brought us some fried pickled jalapeno chips. They were really great.

I loved this course! At one point it must have been an amazing course. Today it is "pay as you play." The carts were dirty, but it was a ton of fun. The greens were in excellent shape, and with the towering pines, the sound of a drive is like a cannon! Can't wait to play again! :-)

Review BY A FAT GUY - I've been told to never trust a skinny chef... logical advice, and Darwell certainly fits that description, so when I say he's earned every bit of praise I can heap on him you can take it to the bank. THE PLACE: Darwell's seating certainly fits the Cafe / Bistro category. It's a low key kind of classy that's warm and friendly - A welcoming family business you can bring your family to. THE SERVICE: Did I saw welcoming? They stay busy enough that you should probably make a reservation, but you'll be greeted with a smile no matter what, and they'll try to accommodate everyone. You'll be well taken care of, but not overwhelmed with check-ups. Expect the chef to check in on you, and you don't find everything to be perfection "Don't take another bite" until he has taken care of it. THE MENU: What's printed on the paper might seem a bit limited, but these are just the stock stand-bys. The specials change regularly and keep it fresh. Is it Cajun Seafood? ...and then some. Take my advice: Look over the selections before you come - you'll have a hard time choosing. Drinks are more limited, but their sweet tea is up to southern standards. THE FOOD: Attractive presentations of expertly crafted simple recipes with deep flavors and only the best ingredients. You can smell that much walking through the door, so let me dive in with a bit more detail. Portions - You cannot possibly go home hungry. The appetizer could easily be called an entree without sides and things progress from there. Plan on having dinner for tomorrow's lunch as well. Appetizer - I chose one of the specials (and won't tell you what I ordered because I don't think you can get a bad dish. Pick something that appeals to you) It was served quickly, for which I was very thankful - nothing worse than smelling good food and having to wait for it. The crisp parts were crisp, the tender parts were tender, sauce was creamy and showed every sign of having just been made. It was also the perfect ready to eat temperature - again, I think it's somewhat cruel seeing and smelling something delicious in front of you and not being able to dig right in without sauteing your tongue and wasting the flavors for the rest of the meal. Salad - Chop up some veg and throw it in a bowl, right? No. Quality counts, and so does preparation... Ever get a hunk of lettuce that's more stem than anything else? A crouton you could pound nails with? Not here... The lettuce was crisp and selected with care, Croutons were soft but crunchy, Tomato must have come straight from someone's garden, and the house dressing had a delightfully sweet zing. There was also a couple pieces of raw onion - which I mention specifically because they're not to my personal taste... and the dish didn't reek of onions as I usually find. Do I need say how fresh they must be for that to be true? Entree - Again served at the perfect temperature to dig right in, yet somehow designed so that it stayed delightfully warm throughout the course. Pasta cooked to perfection, sauce fresh and delicious, and protein in every bite... We're not talking a dish of spaghetti with a few shrimp scattered around, I mean there was literally meat in every bite with sauce in pasta in perfect proportion. Dessert - This should be illegal. You simply have to try one of the offerings... you won't have room for it, and you'll hurt yourself trying to finish it (split mine with my daughter), but you'll absolutely kick yourself if you don't have one. Delightfully warm and gooey. Absolutely deadly. Totally devine. VALUE: While I unfortunately can't afford to eat here nearly as often as I'd like it's worth every penny plus the long drive from my home (about an hour away). Add to that the fact that I also have lunch tomorrow (and did I mention I'm and economy sized guy?) and I'd consider it a bargain. The quality ingredients, masterful recipe, careful preparation, generous portion, and overall perfection make Darwell's well worth the experience.
