Description

Prairie Dunes is Kansas sand hills golf, rumpled fairways, windswept dunes, and some of the finest Maxwell greens anywhere. Perry Maxwells original nine (1937) and Press Maxwells second nine (1957) combine into a par 70 masterclass of angles and contour. Wind is the hidden hazard; the same hole can vary by three clubs day to day. Bunkering is rugged and natural, blending seamlessly into native sand and little bluestem. Frequently ranked among Americas best, its a strategic examination that rewards creativity and trajectory control.

I was very fortunate to get invited to play here with a group of friends. WOW what an amazing course. It’s a golfers dream. I’m a high handicap player so I will say it’s not an easy course but when you are playing somewhere with that quality and history, score becomes an afterthought. The greens were the purist I’ve ever experienced. The staff was very friendly. Pro shop has one of the biggest selections of merchandise that I have ever seen. Which really surprised me due to the location. If you ever get the chance, don’t pass this place up.

Great layout, one of my favorite. Very tough course that demands keeping your ball in the fairway. I love this hole on the back nine!

Prairie Dunes Country Club was an absolute pleasure! When you get a chance to play a classic masterpiece, you want to know you got its best defense. It did not disappoint! The wind was blowing 25-30MPH, and the fairway and greens were firm and dried out. Plus, the greens were running a smooth 14 with these conditions. That means hit your spot, and don't go long. Perry Maxwell's design was perfect, only to be complemented by his son finishing out the final 9 holes. To think he created this course in the 1930s with a metal blade and horses makes you appreciate this treat even more. The par 3's were fantastic, aesthetically pleasing, and difficult all at the same time. How many times are you gonna find a hole named "The Chute"? Hole number 8 may be one of the best par 4's on this planet. The mounding and dune have your attention off the tee, but quickly, you're demanded to hit an accurate uphill 2nd. Miss all the bunkers and find the green, then the fun starts from there. Bring your imagination, as you'll need it to putt on the "Perry Swells". Whether it's before or after the round, or maybe during; I highly recommend the Gunch Punch. If you stop in the card room, you might have the chance to meet the creator of this libation. This was a treasure in the Plains of Kansas. I wanted to thank the proshop and clubhouse for entertaining us and hope to return one day for another crack at this amazing course.

7 handicapper here. Course was beautiful and the beauty was almost impossible to capture. Golf course was great, but about 15% of the playable areas were burned out. Greens were impossible to score on. Dried out & blazing fast. Would not hold a shot. Fun day, but golf was beyond difficult. Wind was a factor, but not the predominant factor.

We were guests of a member here to play this great old links-style course. It was a cold breezy cloudy day and we got off just ahead of the course MGA National Members Member-Guest tournament. The course is built in the natural sand hills so the fairways can be like roller-coasters at times. The bunkers had brown dirt and not sand as most course bunkers do. All fairways are lined with prairie grass that is incredibly dense so an errant ball is as good as gone. And, where we live grasses like that would be harboring snakes so it was hard to think of “going in” to find a ball. Our member host went in several times and he walked out each time with a handful of balls from about 10 seconds of looking! The greens are TOUGH. Almost all are undulating and with no secondary cut to keep a ball from rolling off. Getting a good shot on a green means landing a shot at or around the pin! If you get the chance to play this gem, take it.
