Description

A small town semi private in Monticello with a straightforward parkland routing and friendly atmosphere. From modest length, par is well defended by tree corridors and a handful of water crossings. It's popular with locals for casual play and leagues. The property offers a driving range and practice green next to the clubhouse. The gentle walk and approachable greens make it welcoming for developing players while still engaging better golfers from the tips.

Never in my life have I experienced management like this at a golf course. Before driving 35 minutes to play, I called ahead to confirm that our group of four golfers and two riders would be allowed. I spoke with a woman who told me it was perfectly fine, that we would need three carts, and that it would be $30 per rider (which is already steep for a $30 course, but fine—we agreed). When we arrived, we were told absolutely not—only two carts per group, no exceptions, riders or not. Completely contradicting what we were told on the phone. At that point we were already there, so we paid and tried to make it work. We were forced to split into two groups just to stay close: one solo player behind us and a group of three ahead. We played like that through the first two holes. Then we started seeing multiple groups with three carts, so we assumed the rule wasn’t being enforced consistently and continued playing. Shortly after, the marshal broke us up, saying the superintendent saw us and said no more than two carts per group. Fine—rules are rules. But here’s the problem: the superintendent and management themselves were playing with more than two carts, and we even saw a group with four carts on the course. You can’t enforce rules on paying guests while management ignores the same rules. That’s unacceptable. Also, from a pace-of-play standpoint, four golfers and two riders using three carts is not slower than four golfers sharing two carts. If anything, it keeps pace moving faster since carts aren’t driving to every single ball. I’ve played golf all over the country, and I have never dealt with this kind of inconsistency, rudeness, or hypocrisy. The course layout itself is decent, and I’ve played here before without issue—but the management and ownership have completely ruined it. We will never return, and I would strongly advise others to confirm policies in writing before making the trip—because what you’re told on the phone apparently means nothing here.

We had an absolutely terrible experience at Hunters Pope Country Club, and it was entirely due to unprofessional, rude, and targeted behavior from management. Before arriving, management was fully informed that our group would be 4 golfers, 2 riders, and would require 3 carts. We were advised of the additional fees, agreed to them, and were told it would not be an issue. However, once we arrived, suddenly having 3 carts became a problem — despite the fact that multiple other groups on the course had 3–4 carts and were never harassed, including groups containing the club president and superintendent themselves. From the moment we checked in, the front desk woman had clearly decided she was going to make our experience miserable — and she succeeded. She even went outside the pro shop and loudly talked about our group, so loudly that we could hear it from the first tee box. Completely unprofessional and disrespectful. All we wanted was to enjoy a round of golf with family visiting from out of town. Instead, we were treated like criminals. Management will likely claim we were slowing play and that complaints were received, but that simply isn’t true. We let anyone behind us play through, as is proper golf etiquette, including multiple singles. The marshal even told us we were not playing slow and admitted he was only following up because management and the superintendent were upset about us having 3 carts. Ironically, forcing us to play 3 golfers and 1 golfer split is what actually slowed everything down — along with being stopped repeatedly by marshals. We had a marshal following us hole after hole, making it very clear we were not welcome. Had we been left alone, we would have finished at least an hour earlier. To top it off, management has publicly responded to negative reviews by calling a woman “Karen” — when her name was actually Katie which can be clearly seen in the post. That alone speaks volumes about the maturity and professionalism of this club’s leadership. Yes, we were offered gift certificates to come back — but even if someone paid us, we would not return. I have never been so angry playing golf while doing absolutely nothing wrong except paying to play. I will say this: there was one sweet, polite young woman in the pro shop and one kind marshal who treated us with respect. Unfortunately, they were the only bright spots in an otherwise miserable experience. Save your money and your peace of mind. There are far better courses that actually respect their guests.

We had a very disappointing experience at this golf course and will not be returning. We called ahead specifically to confirm that we could play 4 people with riders and we needed three golf carts and were told over the phone that it would not be an issue just pay a rider fee. When we arrived, they suddenly changed the story and said we could only have two carts because “it slows people down.” We only have 4 players and two riders! That should have been made clear from the start instead of wasting our time. Before we even teed off on the first hole, we could overhear the woman working up front talking about our group and complaining about us, when we were split up which was extremely unprofessional and immediately made us feel unwelcome. Throughout the round, the course marshal was repeatedly sent out to us for playing “too close,” together as a group nwhich made it impossible to relax or enjoy the game. To be clear, the marshal himself was very nice and respectful, but it was obvious that the rest of the staff kept sending him out unnecessarily. What made this even more frustrating was seeing the superintendent out on the course playing with a group using more than three carts while we were being constantly hassled. A rule is a rule, and blatantly breaking your own rule while enforcing it on others is not professional. Not to mention the superintendent and his group are the ones who are actually holding people up. The course itself is in terrible condition, and the bathrooms were absolutely disgusting. The woman at the front desk was very rude and completely unhelpful throughout the entire experience. Overall, we felt very unwanted at this golf course. Poor communication, poor attitude from most of the staff, and poor conditions. Save your money and go somewhere else.

Always a good time down at the old pope!!! Staff is awesome very friendly and cool very professional. Prices can't beat it love the new renovations to the parking lot definitely much needed. Only complaint would be some of the greens need a little work (could just be the winter time) as well as the cart paths. But overall one of my favorite courses around!!!

This place is a very great priced, very fun course. people are very nice and down to earth. Heard about some groups of prudes leaving bad reviews so thought I would leave a good one because I love this course and the people that own it. I highly recommend a visit here it’s very laid back
