Description

Simsbury Farms is a well-regarded municipal golf complex that offers a full public golf experience with a strong community vibe and excellent practice amenities. The facility includes an 18-hole course that’s designed to be playable for a range of golfers, alongside additional short-course options and a practice area that make it a true “golf hub.” The main course is enjoyable and fair, but it can become challenging when greens are quick or when you’re out of position and forced into tougher approaches. Because it’s a busy municipal facility, you’ll often see leagues, juniors, and regular groups that give the place a lively, accessible energy. Overall, Simsbury Farms is one of the better “public golf ecosystems” in Connecticut—great for both playing and improving.

Love this course. We have one of our client’s charity tournament on this course every year! Everyone is so pleasant and accommodating! Don’t sleep on the tuna salad or the walking nachos at the Hilltop Grill on-site!

Simsbury Farms Golf Course is a sleeper course here in CT. On paper the layout looks like nothing special, but elevation, well placed trees and bunkers, and subtly difficult greens make it play much more difficult that it appears. We played in early October as a 3-some on a Saturday. Our tee time was the first group behind a large scramble tournament without being informed of the scramble when booking. It wasn't too bad, a little slow, but could easily have been worse seeing as there were 5-somes in the scramble. Conditions were pretty good. Tee boxes level with grass. Fairways were well manicured without burnout. Rough was thick, slightly wet, and the leaves were kept to a minimum where you should be in play. Worst conditions were bunkers, but I'd out those at a 6-7 out of 10, so not really that bad. The ground everywhere you could easily and comfortably take a divot from, unlike a lot of courses in the state. The real topic of conversation here is the green complexes. The greens were rolling FAST and they had lots of grain. You had to pay attention to both the overall speed and the grain which heavily affected the speed too. The designer did a good job making severe slopes feel and appear less aggressive than they actually were. That coupled with the speed meant it was incredibly easy to under read putts. Not only this, but missing greens here penalized you heavily. The majority of the greens were on top of knolls that sloped away and surrounded by trees. If you missed any where but short, you were in for a tough up and down. Missing fairways put you in thick rough that made it tough to stop the ball on these fast greens. Overall strategy, if you have a hard time hitting the fairway, at least get it as far toward the green as you can so you can have a wedge in hand on your next shot. We didn't really eat here, just grabbed a hot dog on the turn which was solid. There wasn't a drink cart going around which was strange during a scramble or any weekend for that matter. Overall, Simsbury Farms is getting added to the rotation a couple times a year for sure!

Nice course with very well maintained grass. Worth a try if you're open to driving into Simsbury.

The course was phenomenal yesterday. Extremely well taken care of. No leaves of sticks on the fairways, tee boxes or the greens.

Course is in very good shape but play was slow. Could use a ranger to move things along.
