Description

The Player Course at Lyman Orchards complements the Jones with a distinct 18-hole experience that many golfers find slightly more open and rhythm-friendly while still providing plenty of challenge. It’s designed to be playable for a wide range of handicaps, offering clear landing areas in spots but punishing misses that wander into hazards or poor angles. The round typically flows well, and because it’s part of a two-championship-course property, it’s a frequent pick for outings and golf groups that want destination-quality public golf. Like the Jones, it benefits from strong practice and clubhouse amenities that elevate the overall experience. In short, the Player Course is premium public golf with a slightly different personality—still serious, still scenic, and very repeatable.

Great golf courses in great condition. This is the best public golf facility in the area, by far. All three courses have benefits worth exploring! The Jones course is a beautiful park style course with challenging length and bunkers. The Player course is a unique course that tests your versatility and ability to make different shots from tees and fairways. The apple 9 course is fun for beginners and a great place to practice the basics, even as an experienced golfer.

Great course. Well maintained and a solid pace of play by the other players. It was very easy to book in advance and pay once we arrived.

Its a beautiful track. The best views you can find on a golf course in CT. I just don't understand why they mow down the rough around tee boxes, but not around the fairway. You get punished for good shots because they can't loop a cut.

EDIT: The course itself is great, and I also respect that staff cannot acquiesce to every customer's wants. Frontline staff have a difficult job and I completely understand and respect that. Mostly this review is about customer service and communication. This is specifically for the Apple Course. It is a swamp today (check out my drives, two different holes and the ball is halfway down in the fairway), and the range is closed. I bought a $100 range card, and more often than not the range has been closed due to mowing (Monday morning) or rain... but not enough rain to keep the staff from using it. And not just with students, just by themselves! Not a great look, especially when front desk staff on site are unempathetic and seem not to care. When I emailed their director about the range closures a few weeks ago, he was cool about it, to his credit. A few other people on course today also wondered why no warning was given about the conditions or a discount offered. I am now done coming out here. It's not worth it when the on course experience is inconsistent, you can't warm up, and you're treated with icy indifference.

* I have not played here since 2022. Looks like there are a lot of people unhappy golfers due to the green fee increase. * I wish I can review the Players course and the Jones course separately. I can probably write a paper on each one of them because I played each course nearly 100 times in the 90’s. When I played there for free as a golf team member of Wesleyan University. I revisited for the first time in multiple decades in 2022. With my wife, who is a beginner. And the magic was still there, fortunately. Course condition was not impeccable; it never was. Jones course hasn’t changed a bit. Fairways were wide and the course let you fight against the natural element : wind, elevation and water. The player course also stayed the exact same. It tested your golf strategy; blind shot, teeing off with irons, severe elevation change. Recent reviews kind of scare me away from playing here. But I will definitely revisit soon. Especially during the fall when you can play golf and watching the beautiful New England autumn (and some apple picking) at the same time.
